back to article How the cloud could conquer the world in 2010

The cloud was one of the big topics of 2009, with a broad swath of technologies and offerings coming to market from vendors of all shapes and sizes. There was much excitement, but there was an equal amount of consternation about security, reliability, and adoption trends. And while we're still not exactly sure what the cloud …

A Subversive Space for Disruptive Technological InterActivity

"And while we're still not exactly sure what the cloud is - sometimes it's a website that hosts your social data, other times it's an application delivered through a web browser, and still other times it's full-scale multi-tenant IT infrastructure - there is something meaningful in there somewhere."

    Dave,

For some, and those few may be many more than the Status Quo Straights in Establishment Systems may Realise, and with many more being ZerodDaily Educated and yet to Come,.... for the Cloud and its Services are still in its Infancy as an IT Bairn/Wild Child,.... is it also an Exceptional Smart Flowering Power Movement, United Semantically in an Overarching Underground Swell Generating Waves of Novel Alternative Thinking for Positive ProAction and Constructive Community FutureBuilding. ...... and thus is a Fabulous AIgent for Rapid Radical Change to be Highly Recommended and Supported, although it is another one of those Artificial Spooky Intangible Creations which is just Out There, and Applications Specific .

      Stop

      Why?

If you have something to say, don't you think making it legible and parsable by humans (in any language you choose) would help?

Why do your endless bizarre comments continue to get past the moderatrix?

        dogged,

A quick scan of your own posts ..."8 posts • joined Monday 16th November 2009 12:21 GMT" ... reveals a kettle calling the pot, black?

And you may like to consider that amfM reaches out to the Virtual Machinery bods on El Reg and thus will humans have to evolve and/or study the ProgramMING Texts a little more Intently. Let your Mind wander into the Imagination which the words present, for they tell of the Future? And El Reg is a lot more than just a lesbian on-line magazine so you can expect it to have more than just vanilla source.

And anyway, NEUKlearer HyperRadioProActive IT is always going to be something of a Specialised Field subject to Stringent Controls given the Nature of what IT can Do, so IT is something which will be carefully Screened before Sharing with Select Audiences.

    Available, Safe and Secure ?

I have too many concerns about my Apps and Data not always being available (ie google/gmail outages), correctly backed up (Sidekick debacle), nor secure (banks get hacked... I doubt clouds will be better). I'm not sure most of what we see about the cloud gives me enough ASS.

Somehow, I'm not convince the acronym will stick either, which is a pity because we certainly need to focus on that !

    "Cloud" is a marketing term

"Cloud" is a marketing term, primarily used by people who don't understand that it's a catch-all for the word "connected via a network". I suspect it derived from the '80s and early '90s textbooks describing packet switching, which were trying to teach upper-level protocols (OSI's so-called "presentation layer", mainly), without confusing people with info about the lower layers that actually transport the data.

In other words, some middle manager/marketer "took a class", was convinced he knew it all, and somehow managed to perpetrate this current meme known as "cloud computing".

Those of us who have been around for a while recognize it as it really is ... Basically, it's centralized computing, with higher bandwidth allowing GUI instead of text terminals. Mainframe technology with a glittery interface ... but mainframe technology nonetheless. It's an all-singing, all-dancing, brightly colo(u)red, dinosaur.

Barney, in other words. And targeting the same mental age group, computing-wise.

    Yawn...the cloud again

Too many privacy concerns (Google doesn't care about your privacy) security and reliability concerns for me to trust my data to that 40 year old paradigm of trying to take computing back inside the glass house. So not going there. Its the biggest example of inside the box thinking that I've seen in a long time. New name, same old story.

Now a computer that understands natural language that I don't have to type on and will hold a conversation (that is a computer conversation) with me I'd be interested in. I'm sick of typing.

      Hi, cmaurand,

Whenever you are Understood QuITe Perfectly Enough by a Computer ProgramMING, what would you like to Chatter about? There would be many more likely to listen, if your Missives are Addictively Engaging and Universally Attractive although that does require a very ESPecial Base Algorithm for Complete Capture of Flexible and Dynamic, Live and Evolving Revolutionary Virtual Machine Codes and CodeXSSXXXX

    Well Well Well

It would seem that the term 'Cloud' has really fired up our own lovable(?) amanfrommars. This would seem to me, an excellent statement on the practicality of the idea.

Unfortunately I've a strong suspicion that the w^H bankers that gave us the current 'interesting' financial environment will think this is a wonderful idea.
