back to article 'Top three Balkans drug kingpins' arrested after cops crack their Sky ECC chats

European police arrested three people in Belgrade described as "the biggest" drug lords in the Balkans in what cops are chalking up to another win in dismantling Sky ECC's encrypted messaging app last year. On May 11, law enforcement in Serbia and the Netherlands carried out coordinated raids on the cartel's alleged leaders …

Great, so that's the drugs problem fixed then.

We should nationalise it. Then we would be sure drugs don’t pay.

Nah, it will be a postcode lottery. Levels of availability will vary between England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

          " a postcode lottery"

The proper terms are "grass roots democracy" or "local decision making". As opposed to "centralised control freakery", aka "standardisation" or "predictability".

Take your pick, depending on your political standpoint.

E2EE Is A Bust!! (Pun Intended).......

Quote: "...European cops also pointed to two other encrypted messaging services, EncroChat and ANOM, that were also infiltrated and shut down by police..."

Have I mentioned (once or twice) that interweb services which (allegedly) provide E2EE ... these services represent a SINGLE POINT OF FAILURE for their users??

That would include users who turn out to be criminals!!

A better bet is to use private encryption with the transport layer provided by..................Gmail!!! Who'd have thunk it!!!

(Hint: Bruce Schneier, Daniel Bernstein, "app password".....)

If you arrested them in NL, then slimmest might be construed as 'Smartest"..

    Nationalise The Drugs

This will allow the farmers etc to continue to make a living and the governments to tax the sales.

Perhaps some of the big king pins would be able to use their skills to just sell them legally no more need for guns etc

      Re: Nationalise The Drugs

Plus you could ensure needles aren't shared and offer rehabilitation services to those that need it in your government sanctioned, free drug clinics, you know, like they do in the Norway..

All whilst having specialists on hand for when any one OD's and they can sort them out.

But will the revenue from drug sales make up for the lost GDP from replacing stolen goods and repairing the damage from robberies?

Hmmm, that's would be a hard strike against corruption, too many take profit of the business at all levels to make it stop.

Let's nationalise and replace crime with inefficiency!

      Re: Nationalise The Drugs

No need to nationalise. Just legalise and regulate. Government doesn't have to be involved in the details of provision.

        Re: Nationalise The Drugs

If you legalise and regulate then the TGA, MHRA, HPFB, FDA or whatever your local equivalent pharmaceutical regulatory authority is, i.e. the government, will absolutely need to be involved in ensuring the supply meets minimum quality standards.
