According to Chinese media outlet Jiemian News, which sits on Beijing's list of approved media outlets, WeChat …

There is a lot to dislike about Chinese society

But holding executives feet to the fire is not one of them.

Lucky them. In previous times (IIRC not even a decade ago) they would have been executed. Not even joking. I think they still do if fraud is involved.

Or, to use the old catchphrase (meme for you hipsters) they would have been soooo fired.

Accountability for the people in charge?

Sorry China you're doing it wrong! If you want to overtake the US you need to look at examples like Boeing with the 737 Max or pretty much the entire banking industry in 2008. They found a few mid level people to place the blame on, while those at the top emerged unscathed and later get bonuses for all that "hard work" of dealing with the crisis! That's how you attract and retain the best people, pay them a ridiculously large multiple over the average worker and make sure they never have to take the blame for even the biggest screwups!

WeChat is often ranked as the most used app in China. At the end of 2022, Statista clocked the platform as having over 1.3 million monthly active users.

    Should be billion surely?
