back to article Meta axes two Danish datacenters amid shift to AI infrastructure

Meta has canned two datacenters under development in Denmark as part of a broader plan to deepen investments in artificial intelligence. In a statement provided to The Register, Peter Münster, Meta's head of communications for the Nordics, confirmed the termination of the project. "We are currently expanding our datacenter in …

Then you have another problem. There will be a huge overcapacity of electricity generation and the prices will drop to negative.

I don't mind getting paid for consuming electricity, but it may not be very sustainable. That is why you need these very large consumers, to keep the electricity prices high and to be able to double the electricity supply every so many years.

... or let people in cold houses host them

It's below 10 in both my office and my kitchen, a problem that cannot be solved without blowing the grand a month limit on the electrickery.

I'll host a couple of big servers if they pay the leccy bill. I'll even keep an eye on the blinkenlights for free.

I've heard there are some datacenters that pipe waste heat towards remote heating. It's a good idea. I suspect it takes quite a bit of infrastructure, though.

All major Danish cities have district heating systems that can take the heat. The excess heat from the facebook barns is distributed to houses by Fjernvarme Fyn

There are rules that make it unattractive in Denmark. I work in building that houses a datacentre - but waste heat can't be used to heat the building, AC pipes it outside, because otherwise you have to pay tax on it. Yes, tax on heat you already paid taxes to generate.

If there's one thing Demark is good at, it's creating a burdensome and Lovecraftian tax system, the horrors of which are beyond comprehension.

There was (is?) a company that actually did this a few years, but darned if I can find it.

    Streamlining

"Over the last several weeks, we've announced a number of steps that will make us a more streamlined organization..."

That will be the number of steps steps taken by your ex-employees from their cubicle to the door clutching an archive box of "fond" workplace memories...

One company I worked for had 'let someone go', but he was working out his notice, mostly at the photocopier. He was eventually 'escorted' from the building, clutching his briefcase.

Aside - How to use an Axe

I recently found this on the Internet:

“Keep your hands away from the log that you are chopping into kindling. If you like playing on your smartphone, using the tv remote, or just generally enjoy having fingers,”

    Article at: https://www.gardentoolbox.co.uk/garden-hand-tools/gardeners-cutting-tools/axes-and-axe-handles/

I realise that the use of the word 'Axes' in the article title was metaphorical (or some other rhetorical device the name of which eludes me), but if you are going to 'wield the axe', it is best not to cut off your fingers (metaphorically or otherwise).

Now you may be wondering why I was looking up axes on the Internet, well, a very posh knife manufacturer in the UK has just added a small 'kitchen' axe to its merchandise, a snip at £400 (yes, you read that correctly: four hundred pounds)

    https://www.togknives.com/product/kitchen-axe/?utm_source=Total%20Subscribers&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Product%20Launch%20-%20Kitchen%20Axe%20%2801GM2ZVKD8GJJ5ZAV89EM5F09Q%29&_kx=xWenPTWkKZRpjesIfVgq5SZC6d6Sl7RyDhEqmH1nFLg%3D.YwEXX8

My personal experience of 'DIY' and general manual 'dexterity', together with my love of 'having fingers' persuaded me not to buy said item.

    Merry Christmas everyone

There are only so many data centres needed to share knitting patterns and conspiracy theories, which seems to be all that’s on FB these days.

I don’t think they’ll be troubled by huge demand for the Metaverse somehow.
