back to article Microsoft: (Cyber) winter is coming as DDoS attack disrupts Russian bank

Microsoft has warned Europe to be on alert for cyber attacks from Russia this winter, just as a series of attacks hit Russian organizations – including the country's second-largest bank. The government-controlled St Petersburg-based VTB finaincial institution announced on Tuesday it was facing an "unprecedented cyber attack …

Ukraine strikes back... Arrogant Russia didn't expect somebody could do that. Putin Kuyhlo is destroying Russia, despite the censors Russians will get the truth some day.

European nations and the US should also brace for more Kremlin-backed influence operations – preying on citizens' concerns about rising energy prices and inflation, and pushing pro-Russian narratives

There are already US conservatives to do so. Us right-wingers being Russian agents... Stalin must be laughing in Hell.

(It isn't limited to the US, in Europe too the Far Right is licking Putin's boots.)

      "Us right-wingers being Russian agents..."

What would you expect? They put a commie sympathizer in the Oval Office for four years.

Has anybody tapped McCarthy's grave yet? He must be spinning fast enough to light up the shoreline of Lake Michigan ...

    Unprecedented?

    "unprecedented cyber attack from abroad,"

More like reciprocal and fully deserved.

This would have me rolling on the floor if it weren't for the obvious horror being perpetrated.

Wiper targets are municipal registries involved in the draft

There have been speculations that the wiper software targets local institutions that are responsible for drafting men for the war in Ukraine.

The Kremlin has delegated the responsibility for the draft and provisioning of soldiers to local authorities. That move takes the draft and its associated problems out of sight of the urban population. The draft is very unpopular, especially with young men expecting to be send to die in Ukraine.

Creators and peddlers of Russian malware are among the young men who are drafted. It is not too much of a stretch of the imagination to think that some of them might see this as a way to avoid having to go to Ukraine. It seems to me much safer than openly protesting or trying to flee the country.

...organizing and participating in a DDoS attack is a criminal offense, when it's us getting stuffed."

Deja vu. 10 years later, Microsoft Windows is still completely vulnerable to basic ransomware and viruses. Surely the solution is to stop using Microsoft products?

Windows is littered with endless vulnerabilities that are so regularly exploited that Microsoft is holding a sign saying "why are you still using this?"

Many Linux flavors are easy to install. Why not just try Mint Linux? It's easy to configure, even to dual boot, meaning much less worries for a normal user overall. There are alternatives for most software and it's never been easier to rely on this as your main operating system.

And the next big scale attack...

will occur next Tuesday, originating from US-based servers...

DDOS attacks are to cyber security what a drizzle is to winter.
