back to article Cloudy Chinese word processor vendor denies deleting defiant docs

Chinese productivity software vendor Kingsoft has denied that it deletes documents that contain content that might displease Beijing. China routinely cleanses social media of any commentary that represents opposition to government policy or contains hashtags associated with protest. In recent weeks, posts that complained about …

There is zero reason to store your documents in a cloud.

Imagines a Pritti Patel Policeman reading your every word for signs of dissent. Do you want that? No. Then why store your documents in a cloud with a "security and law enforcement" catch all surveillance clause? A clause routinely abused for mass surveillance.

This is especially true, right now, of Parliament data. It should not be in the cloud in Ireland.

The Chinese oppression is a cautionary lesson, not an ideas board.

Your censors will be looking for un-british thought, to whit: Failure to winge. Not being sufficiently critical of your betters. Suspicious praising of the government and national health.

    China doing Chinese things

Chine is using "1984" as a manual, as usual. Nothing new here.

I’m more inclined to “Brazil”. Either the country or the film. Both qualify.

Kingsoft's post does state that the company "has always put user experience and user privacy protection first." Kingsoft has learned from Microsoft, Google, Amazon and many others, that they need to produce a global statement without any value. It is a bit like all those cookie-popups saying "We care about your privacy".

I dunno, they have some useful aspects, like being able to quickly spin up multiple instances to run parallelable workloads. But these should really be transient cases - don't leave stuff up there once the job has finished.

Collaborative working is sometimes useful - multiple reviewers simultaneously commenting on a design, so they don't tread on each other's toes. But that doesn't always work out, and MS has a nasty habit of buggering up my shared design docs and losing all the images therein. So even cloudy collaboration is a double-edged sword.

I draw the usefulness line at long term storage on other peoples' computers. Long term that feels like trouble waiting to happen. If it's not happening already.
