back to article Google uses deep learning to design faster, smaller AI chips

Googlers and UC Berkeley academics say they have devised a way to use artificial intelligence to design faster and smaller chips that accelerate artificial intelligence. In a note shared on Thursday, the researchers said they have developed a deep-learning approach called PRIME that generates AI chip architectures by drawing …

Prime Premium Content Produces and Presents Exceptional Results and Almighty Assets

To avoid typical pitfalls associated with using supervised machine learning, the researchers devised PRIME to avoid being misled by so-called adversarial examples.

In other words ..... Only accept for further processing, any and all data which is mutually beneficial and positively reinforcing. Such is the ancient path chosen by Advanced IntelAIgent Virtual Machine Design.

A little something humans demonstrate a dogged aversion to .... for reasons most probably directly associated with the retention and expansion of an inequitable advantage for an increasingly more vulnerable to systemic shock and administrative collapse few.

You last paragraoh makes absolutely no sense (to me). What are you actually trying to say?

You last paragraoh makes absolutely no sense (to me). What are you actually trying to say? ..... AlanSh

The last paragraph asks of the status quo/the powers that be/global Earthly leaderships, whoever and/or whatever that may be ....... Do you think more of the same old failed nonsensical solutions without any novel radically creative agnostic virtual interventions are going to deliver more of the same old failed and deeper failing nonsensical solutions without novel radically creative agnostic virtual interventions or anything/something else which might actually be surprisingly successful and able to be universally welcomed and encouraged to demonstrate its wares ‽ .

If it is a matter of the former being delivered rather than the latter, then their systems are in for an almighty shock.

That's about as clear as that last paragraph can be made, AlanSh.

He is basically saying the powers that be will ABUSE this fast A.I.-based chip development ability and cause various types of Armageddon within the virtual world, the real world OR BOTH!

You wish .... in your dreams .... but your final observations is valid and most apposite like in the guise of an APT, Mike S.

The only relevant pertinent, impertinent question to consider worthy of conjecture is who and/or which patient or client will be able or enabled to survive and prosper in such a situational environment ‽ .

reduced die area usage by 1.5x

Doesn't that leave it requiring minus 0.5 times the original area. So for every wafer you put into the system, you somehow get one and a half unused wafers back.

    Nothing new here

It's been a while that CPUs have been designed by programs.

The only difference is that now, said program is being called "AI", so it's newsworthy.

      Re: Nothing new here

You're missing the point. Give a decently famous educational facility a few million dollars then use what ever "breakthrough" found to raise your stock price by a few billion. Of course it's only a temporary price rise, so you have to keep coming up with breakthroughs.

They only breakthrough Google ever had is the breakthrough of your privacy.

    Size matters

"PRIME favors designs that have larger on-chip memory and, as a result, less processing power."

Curiously, a year or so ago some other researchers at Google found a critical threshold in system scale, above which performance improved significantly.

Expect the new round of AI-optimised chips to nail these scale effects good and proper.

Still no nearer to General Intelligence though. One for third-gen AI-optimisation, perhaps?

The self-improving AI cycle has nevertheless begun; make sure the OFF switch is implemented purely in hardware!

AI used to improve the performance of AI is what the Singularity is supposed to be about...

      Singularity

The Singularity is a distributed software phenomenon. It is assumed to involve General Intelligence. Optimised chip architectures running dumb Big Data + Machine Learning don't even leave the ground.

        Re: Singularity

It's supposed to be a positive feedback loop: AI used to build improved AI...

This even has a name "positive Singularity Feedback Loop". Right now this would be the slow, initial phase, of course.

        Quote from MIT Review:

        > Most visions of this singularity focus on the creation of machines intelligent enough to devise machines even more intelligent than themselves, and so forth recursively, thus launching a positive feedback loop of intelligence amplification.
