Projects that have hit trouble will struggle. But in Putin's Russia, merely complaining about that will be dangerous – which is why the consultancies have left.

I thought they left because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Plenty of non Russian projects where the businesses didn’t want to hear of problems and even sent end users who protested their innocence to Prison.

The post offices Horizon project springs to mind, I assume there are others just less high profile.

If they were leaving on moral grounds they would have left after the invasion of Georgia, the last invasion of Ukraine or in response to the repeated assassination of critics across Europe.

DXC doesn't get any praise here. For Mike "The Screamer" Salvino, it was probably a convenient way to WFR 4,000 people whilst seeming to be some sort of moral crusader.

If DXC really lived by its "people first" policy, surely it would have found a way to ensure the staff there had some sort of way out of the country. The Russian people != Putin.

With the Ruble in freefall, they are probably looking mostly to cut their financial losses.

Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Meanwhile in other news, these same businesses continue to donate substantially to US republican congress folk, who in turn get major portions of their "contributions" from Russian lobbyist and who think the invasion is good stuff.

Well, it isn't like the shed divisions could be sold for even one American dollar in the current environment and market; they're worthless to anyone outside Russia with the national embargoes being put in place.

But dictatorial states like Russia and China have always wanted to have a completely Balkanized nation, from internet to hardware to services. They don't want to depend on outsiders, and it galls them that "mother nation" can't do it all alone. :(

Strategic independence of key assets was a thing for both the US and UK until very recently.

until ~ 2005 the uk PSTN was considered ok to transmit stuff up to secret classification, that all changed when BT was ordered to let others install their own kit in BT’s exchanges.

Look now how the US has kicked Huawei out of the 5G access market, you can’t even buy a Huawei phone in the us and they have Huawei execs arrested in foreign countries.

As for favouring the mother nation, look no further than France for wanting to protect her own industries at all costs.
