back to article Florida man accused of breaking Mastodon's open-source license with botched social network launch

A Florida man has been accused of breaking the copyleft license of Mastodon by running an online instance of the software without providing its source code as required. And not only that, the real-estate baron and wannabe tech tycoon has been told he has a month to fall in line with the fine print or put himself potentially at …

    Mar-a-OhOh

This is further complicated by the fact that the wannabe tycoon is trying to sell his yet to be implemented (except in test) idea to Digital World Acquisition Company and list it on the Nasdaq stock exchange yielding him tycoonish money but still putting his new public company under Mastodon's rules.

      Re: Mar-a-OhOh

As I recall, Florida Man wanted to kill off the Section 230 of the FCC's rules in order to silence some of his critics. He's now using that as an excuse for staying on some platforms and suing them.

Given his known method of operation about not paying lawyers, among others, I'm surprised he's able to sue anyone.

Florida man eaten by a mastodon.

The animal thought to be extinct turned out to be thriving in the Florida Everglades. The man was hiding away and was deep in the process of breaking the GPL when the animal ambushed him. Unfortunately it is understood that the animal ate the source code too.

I mean, copyright violation aside, I think this is excellent. Anyone should be able to quickly deploy social infrastructure with minimal reliance on central gatekeeping. In the optimistic world, this leads to a massive boost to Mastodon development. Props to Mastodon!

    Why 30 days?

I guess the 30 day period might be part of the published terms. But if not, I’d only give 30 minutes warning. It’s going to court anyway, why not get a jump on things..

Just so they can say they gave a chance to comply and it didn't happen. Then, it becomes obviously intentional infringement.

The court would want to see that you'd given a reasonable notice period to correct what the defence would argue to have been an inadvertent oversiight.

    Astonishingly, he DID get investment

As is his habit, he got others to pay for everything and it appears that the the sheer volume of the permanently deluded is large enough for people to put money in it.

That is IMHO a good thing, because puts the people you really ought to avoid all in one club and makes them easy to identify.

What will be even more funny is if this business goes the way of all the other scams Florida man has executed. After all, this is the man wo managed to make a casino fail - in Vegas. It'll be a just reward for his investors, it's not that there isn't a track record going back decades that ought to have been a massive red, nay, orange flag in the first place..
