back to article D-Wave claims it can build a gate-model quantum computer

D-Wave calls quantum computers "solvers." And as with PCs today, these solvers are going to segmented into fast, faster, and fastest. The Canadian company already has a relatively fast quantum computing device, and is going to build a faster quantum computer that can handle more complex questions. This superconducting system …

    "D-Wave claims"

Not a problem. We'll just wait and see what D-Wave delivers.

And, as far as quantum computing is concerned, even if D-Wave is a year late, it will still be an accomplishment.

    How's factoring coming along?

It strikes me you can determine if you have an error correction problem, or something more fundamental by trying to find the private key corresponding to a public key.

5000 qubits is a long key! A 2048 will be good enough for such a test (=~256 private key).

You know the drill here, but I'll outline it for others:

The model being optimized is the public key generation from the private key, using any commonly used public key encryption algo.

Run the optimizer to try to get as close a public key as you can by twiddling with the private key values.

Generate the target public key using your known encryption algo, and start the solver off somewhere random (i.e. no cheating by starting it near the private key).

When you've got your result in a reasonable time, examine it. Since you know the actual real private key, you can see if the optimizer found the correct private key.

    1) Exact public and private key? Well done, you've succeeded in your quantum aim.

    2) Close to the real private key? Still pretty good, you have an error correction problem there. The value you read had some noise in it.

    3) Close to public key and far away from private key? Oh dear, you've found a local minimum, that's an analogue optimizer you made there.

    4) Far away from public key? Oh dear, you've made a very bad analogue optimizer.

Algos like this, don't work for regular optimizers, but a "quantum" optimizer, a-la Shroedinger would be going through all possible probablistic states and thus *would* work.

You can even compare it to stock digital optimizers, the kind we normally use the real world that you can simply pull from Apache Math lib (i.e. not an algo simulating your hardware pretending to be an optimizer ....no "simulated annealing" marketing crap please).

    https://commons.apache.org/proper/commons-math/userguide/optimization.html

And see how they compare. They tend to be 3) or 4).

      AC, Hi,

Another equally viable interpretation and much more encouraging result delivers ....2) Close to the real private key? Very good, you have an error reduction solution there. The value you read added in noise.

'Tis a simple easily made fundamental error to correct though ..... Don't read in additional noise/see added complexities.

      No surprise.

And saying "stock digital optimizers" reminded me of something...

I remember "Black Monday" a few years back that was apparently driven (and sustained) by a number of high volume marginal trade algorithms automatically reacting to 'panic sell' by investors...

We don't need quantum computing to make this kind of thing happen EVEN FASTER.

(that being said solving differential equations for science sounds like a GREAT application because you can solve them multiple times like repeating a science experiment, to help ensure accuracy)

Elliptic Re: How's factoring coming along?

Elliptic curves have way shorter key length at same security level, so they are more exposed to quantum. I notice that NSA/NIST have abandoned their elliptic push, are doing lots of post-quantum crypto.

    Really?

I think a real quantum computer will be built in a University Lab first.

Everything else seems to be secret sauce behind an API. Maybe one of these companies got really lucky and somehow got ahead of real researchers…

…or maybe they’re just running undergrad physics experiments and trying to justify the measurements as being some kind of computation.

As with cryptography - Show us how it works (at least roughly)

"Show us how it works (at least roughly)"

Have you looked at their website? They have a section called "Learn". I don't claim to understand it all but it made a lot more sense when I'd put that effort in.

Also, when can I play GTA on it?

        Re: Really?

Yes - it’s the same generic garbage as IBM and co have on their web pages.

A peer reviewed, reproducible experimental paper would be more credible.

Reputable lab results tended to fail at around 20 qbits. That wasn’t for lack of trying - there are real decoherence problems that these companies claim to have solved.

Or maybe the lack of evidence being presented is for a reason? It’s unusual for companies to be less than ten years behind university researchers. The claims presented are bordering on incredible.

          Unhappy

          Re: Really?

I too have been frustrated with the VACUUM of the kinds of information that would make all of this quantum computing (and how to use it) make sense to EXISTING programmers.

i read about qubits and how to make them last longer, and it is interesting.

I read this article about something called "gate model" and ask "what the hell is that?" (probably more digging and frustration of not finding, getting past market-speak, etc.)

found THIS but HOW do you PROGRAM with it? *crickets* (even something like an FPGA would be awesome, but WHEN?)

I suppose I could dive through patents attached to the concept of quantum computing, but those read like hieroglyphics (and no Rosetta stone) sometimes.

So yeah. WHEN do we get a '101' book with examples?

      Stop

      Re: Really?

You have picked THE wrong example; cryptography is a very deterministic, very solid, fact-based, mathematically robust subject. One has only to (want to) understand the mathematics---consisting mainly of multiplication, division, and prime numbers---and the logic behind the ideas. The hardest part is slogging through those individual aspects..

Quantum Computing. on the other hand, is somewhat like 'religion' (insofar as religion is a matter of faith only). And absolutely similar to any and all of the pseudosciences. One is expected to believe, as a matter of faith, that what is presented is true, and to never ask for a "peer-reviewed paper".

No, "quantum computing" is right down there with all other pseudoscience and paranormal beliefs: channeling, crystal-healing, seances, dowsing, mind-reading, telekinesis, cold-fusion, spoon-bending, tarot cards, ouija boards, ESP, psychics. ear-candling...

THE one big tip-off that it's a rip-off? (Sorry; the temptation was irresistible):

You have NOT, nor will you ever, be told how quantum computing works, how to build a quantum computer, nor how to program one. For that matter, not one of the Q-C scions will even attempt to explain to us great unwashed what a 'qubit' is---the very BASIS of 'quantum computing'.

But they WILL, just like the televangelists, take your money.
