back to article Linux 5.14 had plenty of commits, work has gone smoothly – and it should debut next week

Version 5.14 of the Linux kernel seems set to debut next week, after a very calm development process. Linus Torvalds kicked things off for version 5.14 on July 11 when he announced rc1, and wrote, "I don't think there are any huge surprises in here, and size-wise this seems to be a pretty regular release too." By the time rc2 …

    "Don't do it again"

How much better off would the world be if everyone took this to heart. Not just in Linux, or in IT, but in everything.

Rc1, rc2, rc3, rc4, rc5 ... shows the progress of a well designed factory. Then add them suggested 200+ extra engineers, and finally we can add Microsoft's NTFS to the Linux kernel. No need for the two other versions of fake NTFS versions.

Why are there so many commits, changes and tweaks to an OS that just works? Are they really needed or did someone decide having chartreuse fonts on the home page was better than puce?

They get kickbacks from the coal industry

All these new kernel versions need to be compiled, which takes a lot of electricity. Most of that electricity comes from coal, so new kernels are good for the coal industry.

Me, I don't want anything to do with this dirty, coal-powered neckbeard-os.

I do, can't rely on either the neckbeard or new-fangled renewable energy failures to keep warm.

I'll stop contributing to the kernel ...

... when they stop introducing new hardware, and tweaks to the old.
