back to article Flying dildo poses a slap in the face for serious political debate

A week is a schlong time in politics – just ask Bernalillo County Sheriff, Manuel Gonzales III, who may be primed to face heckling at political rallies but handling a flying dildo is a different matter. Earlier this week he was addressing a crowd of voters in his bid to run for mayor of Albuquerque when a drone carrying a …

    politically motivated

It always amuses me when politicians claim that actions are politically motivated, apparently thereby casting them in a bad light .. and seemingly unaware of the fact that their own entire existence is politically motivated.

    Misuse of Drone

This might sound like a harmless, even fun, stunt but the fact remains that that someone flew a UAV carrying a payload over a crowd in order to disrupt a legitimate political meeting. This violates a number of Federal regulations. How seriously its treated by the FAA depends on how much of an example they might want to make of the idiot who did this. Currently the FAA is in "show our teeth mode" because they've got all these drone regulations and people aren't quite getting the message that a) they're Federal regulations and b) they're to be enforced. This behaviour impacts legitimate drone users and modellers -- we get carve outs from the regulations based on adherence to rules that have been laboriously negotiated between the FAA and representative organizations and people who ignore the rules make everyone's life difficult.

The protest was inane anyway. The youth that got arrested for swinging at the candidate claimed he did this because the candidate answered a question "in a disrespectful way". I'm not a lawyer but I suspect this is probably not a good defense.

      Re: Misuse of Drone

Agree. Given the ability of most Americans to settle an argument with guns or explosives and a small minority perfectly willing to try, it wouldn't take too much imagination to turn a drone into a suicide drone.

      An example should be made.

      1. Cliffwilliams44 Silver badge

        Re: Misuse of Drone

Or settle an argument by burning and looting your own community in the name of social justice. And then complain when their communities are depressed and blame it on "White Supremacy"!

      Re: Misuse of Drone

Yes, this wasn't a particularly effective form of protest, and when the cost/benefit ratio is considered it's a terrible use of resources. Pretty dumb.

Gonzales is a controversial candidate (AFAIK; I don't live in Albuquerque, which is just fine with me1). Recently a spectator threw a punch at him at another campaign event, and one of his opponents brought an ethics charge against him – not just the usual posturing, that is, but filed a complaint with regulators that apparently has enough validity to be widely reported, at least. But there are much more effective, not to say legal, ways of organizing opposition to a candidate you dislike.

Sheriffs in New Mexico are generally controversial anyway. The sheriff office in the states I've lived in attracts ire because of its involvement in jails and prisons, in serving legal papers, and in property evictions and repossessions. And sheriffs in New Mexico in particular just can't seem to stay away from political battles they have no reason to engage with.

So a sheriff looking to use the office as a stepping-stone to others needs to have a thick skin and a sense of humor, at the very least. Tact and diplomacy would also be helpful.

1As cities go it's OK, I suppose, but I'm not a fan of living in cities larger than a few thousand people. Just not an urban type.
