back to article Japan to dangle as many Yen as it takes to lure chipmakers to its shores, because everyone else is doing it too

Japanese prime minister Yoshihide Suga has outlined a national growth strategy that will include doing whatever it takes to lure semiconductor manufacturers to the nation’s shores. The strategy was introduced yesterday and stated that Japan will match investment attraction offers made by other nations, because it wants to …

    I'll be honest here ....................

I thought Japan ALREADY had at least one chip builder plant in operation, as well as most of what was suggested in the piece

surprising to find that they are not on that as it IS their neck of the woods as it were, and they do have a penchant for building complex stuff

Japan to dangle as many Yen as it takes to lure chipmakers to its shores

That's almost the way to do it, for to dangle rather than deliver as much as anything takes, or needs require, supplies nothing but the eternal pain entertaining negative gain with the guarantee of total failure fully assured ........ no matter what the enigmatic dilemma is to be faced and realised as unavoidable. What other readily available alternative is there to remedy an endemic and/or systemic failure whenever there be so many systems under attack to consider and choose from? For example, here be another example ......

I'm afraid of systemic alien superiority .... [says Eddielaidler]

And quite rightly so, Eddielaidler. Any being with even just a titter of wit would be a prime fool and pretty useless home grown tool not to be.

Sound business advice though? dictates that one of the very simplest of fiat capitalist/mercantilist American ways to learn and prosper from that which you may/would have no inkling of, but certainly one would be wise to correctly fear is easily overwhelming of all possible traditional and conventional defence and attack forces and resources and sources, is to try buy into their enterprise with investing donations of ....... well, meaningful realistically numbered fiat currency stakes initiating a Private Pirate Public JOINT* Environment in which to transact future operations which ideally would be best mutually beneficial rather than creative of alien conflict, SWIFT** catastrophe and Earthly meltdown with foreign able and enabling bodies/Advanced IntelAIgent agents in Absolute Command and Global COSMIC*** Control, for there is nothing else practically available to you to effect their course of actions should you wish to be effective in having any impact on future direction and decisions to be taken. And there is no guarantee that even that most simple of tasks would be attractive and acceptable whenever it is only vital for human JOINT Future Participation in Almighty Alien AIdVentures and they have such a long and sad and bad and rad crazy history of mad self-destructive adventuring/otherworldly pioneering. There is a very strong argument against that privilege and concession being granted, because of that endemic systemic failing in the species which seems to be unable to learn from an ever expanding series of constantly repeated mistakes.

There is in such cases a very real and present danger in throwing good money after bad and investing in the wrong solution and losing everything, including the plot, in the result. Life's a bitch, and aint that the gospel truth, ... and especially so nowadays.

Choose wisely, .... your future lives depend upon it.

This seems to be the new normal. Countries are scrambling to bring chip production in house. We've recently seen South Korea and the United States initiate similar programs (and I probably missed some European announcements).

The big question, in my mind, is how this will be accomplished? If the goal is to do more than just bribe an existing player to build a foundry in your country you get into questions of who is going to fund it, build it, own it, operate it, and direct it; none of which are easily resolved in a democracy with competing political and economic interests.

It will be interesting to see how it sorts out.

most likely it will cause an increase in automated processes. China often does labor intensive things because they pay slave wages. Moving foundries away from China requires less labor in the process to be profitable. There are a lot of foundries already in places _NOT_ China. But yeah, this kind of move won't happen overnight. "All eggs in one basket" no more.
