back to article Belgian parliament halts China Uyghur 'genocide' debate after DDoS smashes ISP offline

Government and academic websites and IT services in Belgium were down for hours on Tuesday after their internet provider Belnet was hit by a significant distributed denial-of-service tsunami. “The Belnet network is currently under DDoS attack, resulting in reduced connectivity for our customers. Our teams are working hard to …

Thank you Bill! If it weren't for you, we'd have to invent the botnet.

... and it’s not clear who was behind the attack nor why.

Here's a hint - it's in your headline. The Middle Kingdom seems to up to its normal belligerent, thin-skinned, 'It's your fault, not ours', rhetoric. At some stage, this country's actions over Uyghurs, Hong Kong, Taiwan, The South China Sea, Tibet, etc need to be held to account.

      Nope, too easy.

Why would China seek to interrupt something that will happen anyhow by something this blatant? Doing so would only harden attitudes towards China and influence decisionmaking negatively towards China.

There are other parties in the world with this capability who have no problem at all messing with a whole country if it benefits them, and they're in competition with China. They could have done this too

I won't believe anything until the facts emerge. Having an opinion in advance of the facts tends to make you blind to alternatives.

        Re: Give us a clue

There are a lot of people in China, and it's wildly improbable that none of them have access to a botnet. This attack could have originated in China without having been requested or sanctioned by the Chinese government.

It's foolish to simply declare "it was China" with no evidence, because as you say there's little incentive for this sort of thing as a matter of foreign policy. It's equally foolish to eliminate all of China – government and private citizens – from consideration.

The position the Reg took in the article is the sensible one. We don't know. And, really, it doesn't much matter.

Is that a copy of anyone else's program ....... a proven quite effective stealthy project snaffled from contemporaries based and exercising it extensively both further abroad and in-house at home somewhere?

Or does that sort of activity not happen everywhere else too, in order to try and maintain and sustain and retain some sort of virtually remote, relatively anonymous, practically autonomous, almighty elite executive office command and control for the power and energy that coincidentally also creates systems' nemeses, .... disruptive creative novel progress beyond conventional establishment and traditional earthly command and control?

A simple short smart perusal of mainstream media sources and forces would certainly evidence the fact and practice as being default endemic and quite conveniently normal, surely?

You can try your very best to deny such is as a Current Current and Extremely ACTive Ultimate Prime Premier type IoT Thing, but be assured such is just as so much wishful thinking and all to no avail in the future presence of, and with ongoing presentations of abundant undeniable evidence to the contrary ........

Beware the curse of unintended consequences and unforeseen imaginable difficulties ..... and the thought that there being any practical relief in the false belief that forewarned is forearmed and can provide any adequate or overwhelming defence.

Attaining and maintaining digital superiority in cyber capabilities will have any force, by natural default, exercising its universally applicable leadership and remote virtualised abilities in direct competition and possible partnership with or alternatively see parties engaged in opposition to those others similarly wise to the powers made available with/to key players and source drivers with a sustainable digital superiority in both the global private business and nationalised geopolitical party SCADA sector, and throughout the pirate/renegade rogue/white.grey.black hatted crack hacker/elite programmer circles and deep minded dark internetworking webs/shadow systems.

It is illogical, and negligently naive and extremely dangerous to not imagine nor accept nowadays, with all of the almighty virtual machinery so readily available to all with half a wit and the ability and inclination to use it at their beck and call, that the future will be nothing at all like the past with all of its present difficulties to continue to endure and maintain, rather than it being transformed with New Chains of SMARTR Commands and NEUKlearer HyperRadioProACTive IT Controllers introducing Fundamental Radically Changing Revolutionary World Orders with Universal Planetary Disciplines to Boot/Download and Install into Human Operating Systems .....and with Traditional and Conventional Mass Multi Media Leading the Way and Projects with their BroadBandCasting of Edutaining Novel News and Current GeoPolitically Sensitive and Oft Necessarily Quite Secret and Stealthy Affairs.
