    Iran sanctions

Confused here... why is a German company paying penalties over a unilateral US sanction?

      Re: Iran sanctions

Because if your product contains anything from the US then it is subject to US trade laws & sanctions. This is also true of the entity list and Huawei. It could be as simple as a single screw from the US but in this case it is some lines of code. SAP don't even need to have any developers in the US, if they used a library that was written in the US then it counts.

If you have a division of a company that operates in the US, they will apply penalties to that division if they trade with a sanctioned entity.

Have a read about the legally-arguable concept of "extraterritoriality".

I wonder if the company of a certain Canadian prisoner being held, allegedly, for Iran sanctions violations has been offered a similar deal?

It thoroughly disgusts me that the world is expected to obey American edicts and bans on trade and commerce, given their HORRIBLE record of making false and unproven charges leading to thousands or even hundreds of thousands of deaths as in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. What are we DOING letting the most invasive nation on the planet set the standards for "decent" national behaviors? What is next? We let Russia or China set the goal posts? How about North Korea? :(
