back to article From cash machines to commercial kitchen appliances, Doom really will run on almost anything

If you've ever worked in a commercial kitchen, you probably know what a "bump bar" is. These plank-like computerised boards are the organisational force behind every restaurant, enabling sweat-drenched chefs to see pending orders and ensure a steady flow of food to the front of house. Would it surprise you to learn that …

If you think running Doom on a kitchen bump bar is unusual, how about it running on a 1990s digital camera?

    Doom on a pregnancy test

Unfortunately, it wasn't really on a pregnancy test. The screen and microcontroller had both been replaced and put in to a pregnancy test shell.

Ah yeah, that's true -- I've tweaked the story to reflect this.

      Also, it's pointless.

DOOM has graphical displays at the bottom of the screen that tell you how seriously fucked you are, regardless of what you run it on.

    I saw the original video....

...about the bump bar running an industrial-esque X86 CPU and figured it'd only be a matter of time before Doom appeared on it.

In terms of running Doom on odd things, I ran Doom on a Rockbox-firmwared iRiver H320 (I think) some....oh god, knocking on twenty years ago it'd be now.

I'm getting old, I fear. It had to happen eventually I suppose.

PS: It was only borderline playable, but it was playable.

Mix a bored techie and an obsolete piece of hardware...

A testament to the inguinity of techies with too much time on their hands.

    I wonder...

If I could get it to run on the dashboard of my car. It's not like it's moved much recently...

Nice sized screens(yes, plural), lots of input keys from the steering wheel, and a cracking soundsystem.

Drive-by shooting to which most would approve me thinks...

      You should absolutely do this.

I also just found out today that there's an obscure Car only implementation of HDMI for cars (HDMI type E for the curious) installed predominantly on Japanese cars.... Of which I own a Japanese car with this mysterious socket installed.

So it's quite possible that not only could I run Doom but with the right cable get Crysis running as well.

"Come Get Some" the unit says and the chef says "Order Up!"

Come Get Some was Duke Nukem...

Oopsie! Wrong FPS, so shoot me! LOL!

That'll be next on the Bump Bar.

      2. Steven Raith

To be fair, Duke Nukem (and Blood) both cribbed heavily from Ash Williams/Evil Dead, so really it makes little difference. :-)

    Don’t show Apple this.

    A product called the “iPadSX”?

How has this not attracted the Fruity Firm’s lawyers?

      Re: Don’t show Apple this.

It significantly predates the fondleslab of the same name. There's a manual from 2006 online using that name.

That's never stopped Cupertino's lawyers before

        Apple Corps vs Apple Inc

One day may be Cupertino will get into kitchen appliances - then the lawyers will no doubt come out of their lairs.

    Here's an option

You could run Doom on a Motion Capture System - internally it's running on MSDOS via a floppy disk that boots it up on the back.

    Get back to work

Getting food at a restaurant always seems to take forever. Now I know why.

Meh, this was a real simple one, didn't even need a recompile because the hardware is already a DOS PC.
