back to article Judge strikes down another attempt by President Trump to force a TikTok US sale

The Trump administration has lost yet another legal decision in its efforts to force Chinese video app TikTok to sell off its US interests purportedly for national security reasons. Late Monday, District of Columbia court judge Carl Nichols granted [PDF] a preliminary injunction filed by the app’s parent company, ByteDance, …

I always thought trump was utterly incompetent at just about everything, but I was wrong. He excels at losing. It's his only skill.

    1. Danny 14

Its a shame he is going. He makes our government look competent by comparison.

    2. botski@comcast.net

"Just about everything"? Wrong - he is and always has been utterly incompetent at everything. One of the worst businessmen in US history - couldn't even run a casino. Failed marriages. Failed parenthood. He couldn't even hide the prostitute hush money. He is literally dumber than a rock. He is a racist, misogynist, White supremacist. I guess that's why right-wing self-proclaimed Christians love him. They are the kind of Christians who owned slaves and segregated blacks.

        Not completely incompetent

        You are incorrect.

In Australia we have a measure of incompetency whereby someone is classified as 'incompetent' if they are unable to procure services in a brothel with a pocket full of $50 bills.

Trump has, in this regard, been successful. Thus, not completely incompetent.

Wow. TikTok, a foreign owned company operating in America, is able to get some "win" in a US Court.

    Utterly amazing!

    1. First Light

I know it's not a popular opinion on here, but for those who are familiar with the US legal system, it's actually NOT that amazing,

    2. Mark Exclamation

What is amazing, is how the Chinese are allowed to use the American system to their advantage, but US companies in China have to do exactly as they're told, or be totally banned (Google, Facebook for example). The West really needs to treat Chinese companies the same way as foreign companies get treated in China. There needs to be a level playing field.

        Americans won

Except the winner here was American free speech.

TikTok *users* troll Trump, booking places at his rallys then not showing up. Most embarrasingly ~ 1 million for the Tulsa rally where he really only had ~5 thousand MAGA nutters.

Trump attacks TikTok *company* claimings it is a threat to "National Security", where *he=nation*, courts repeatedly ask Trump to justify the National Security claim, he doesn't, court rejects claim.

It could have been Twitter or Facebook or any other social platform he was attacking. It happened TikTok is owned by Bytedance and they're Chinese, so it fitted his narrative..... and yours.

But ByteDance didn't attack him, their USA users did.

American won, Trump lost. The liar that Americans never voted into power, was trolled by the Americans that didn't vote him into power.

House has passed a veto proof defence bill that stops him gutting the US military on his way out. Hopefully Republicans realize that if they don't push back and establish their independence of him now, he will pretend to be defactor Republican President in waiting, siphoning off their donations and blocking their primaries and going on every TV pretending to be speaking for Republicans. He'll be the death of their party.

So hopefully they've got a spine now, it's nearly trash collection day and trash needs to be bagged and ready!

"restore patriotic education to our schools"

Okay, that's a bit scary. That's because Trump is heading out, otherwise it would be more than a bit scary.

Now, politics in school do happen, as they happen anywhere two or more people congregate, but a government explicitly ordering schools to teach nationalism is, er... let's just say that, historically, it's strongly correlated with all sorts of things we'd really rather do without.

You're prefer children to be taught to hate their nation? To reject their history and culture? To feel guilty for alleged sins of people that happen to have lived in their country centuries before?

      That's what's happening now. It's fucking awful.

As somebody who was an exchange student in the US I don't get your comment.

What you maybe allude to are those parts of your history you would rather see forgotten. The slaughter of the natives, slavery, oppression of people of colour,... Those are all parts of your history. Other countries have similar or worse things to remember, and in general those countries who would rather destroy all evidence are not what the US and the West say they stand for (with freedom and justice for all). Think about the Armenians, or the Tien an men (whatever it's written like), the GULAGs. Think which countries don't want these or similar things crop up.

Then think about whether you want to associate with them.

        > You're prefer children to be taught to hate their nation? To reject their history and culture? To feel guilty for alleged sins of people that happen to have lived in their country centuries before?

I don't think that children should be taught to hate anything. But I do think that they should be given verified and unbiased details of the history of their country. Both the positives (e.g. the American revolution, at least from the US perspective) and the negatives (e.g. the treatment of native americans and slavery)

If only so that they don't repeat the mistakes their forebears made.

Otherwise, we get people spouting about things like "alleged sins". And that's how we end up with neo-nazis[*] claiming that the atrocities carried out during WW2 (very well documented, and still just barely in living memory) didn't happen, or downplaying them.

        And that's truly fucking awful.

[*] Not sure if this counts as invoking Godwin's Law, but hey, it's a simple and well known example. Sad to say, there's plenty of similar examples for pretty much every first-world country, especially when it comes to those which used to have colonies.

"You're prefer children to be taught to hate their nation?"

If you hate "rejecting history and culture" then stop doing it ... it's you guys who have such a hang-up about the documented historic sins of slavery, Nazism, expansionism, colonialism, exploitation, genocide and so on - Christ, you're calling them "alleged" without even realising how mad that sounds.

Either ignore history and concentrate on the present, or accept *all* of it. You don't have to feel bad that "we" were prime movers in the transatlantic slave trade, because you weren't there. Same reason you shouldn't have to feel proud about the Industrial Revolution: none of it was down to you.

But thinking that knowing the truth about your country's past is being taught to hate it ... I'm speechless to be honest.

People like you are what's wrong with the country, there's nothing wrong with the educational system you just want it to turn young people into a bunch of Trump worshipping morons like you. You want to hide the bad stuff that happened in the past like murdering Native Americans and taking their land by force, having enslavement of a people so built into the economy that a war was necessary to settle the matter, and racism from that which persists until this day.

You're one of those morons who wants kids to be forced to stand up and salute or put their heart on their hand when the national anthem is played, and if you had your way would probably make it a criminal offense to kneel. Perhaps you are unaware that schools only started having kids put their hand over their heart for the pledge of allegiance during WW II - previously they used the exact same salute that Italian facists and Nazis did. You are probably also unaware that the phrase "under god" was only added in the 50s as part of McCarthyism, as if saying those words would somehow keep us safe from the big bad commie threat! Like Trump, you think what you remember from or know of the 1950s was the peak of America and you want to turn back to the clock to that time.

It is only because the republican party / cult of Trump has moved so far right over the past 25 years that everything looks leftist to you now. Not just the media like it used to be, now it is schools, the entire federal government including the FBI and CIA, every country except those ruled by dictators or Trump wannabes, science, math, medicine and facts themselves are all guilty of a "left wing bias" in your world. Quit listening to Rush and Newsmax and rejoin the real world.

          1 - I don't worship Trump

2 - Native Americans were murdering each other quite extensively long before Europeans turned up

3 - My country banned slavery globally, so don't try lecturing me about it. I've never enslaved anybody.

4 - You keep calling me a moron then describing things I don't believe in. That doesn't make me the moron.

5 - I find the Pledge of Allegiance shite and laugh at it

6 - There is no god

7 - Stop trying to tell me what I do and don't think and consider that in the real world people exist that don't fit into your narrow bigoted stereotyped world view.

I think that's enough. Notice how I haven't tried to tell you what you think. Try that approach, you'd be amazed.

A popular service for my kids' virtual teachers is a "get moving" site called GoNoodle, because kids sitting at laptops/tablets all day need breaks to move/stretch. (Despite the badge, this is not the joke. Seriously, making them move is a good thing.)

One of the kids' favorite videos is called "The Llama Song". In it, there is a lyric "President Obama Llama -- YES WE CAN!" Seems political, but it's funny in context, especially with the moves. It passes quickly and is not the most memorable -- the funniest -- part. But I imagine Donny Trump saw that and thought the schools are brainwashing the kids to love Obama / Democrats and hate him. Thus, "unpatriotic".

(I don't know if I'm actually joking; I half expect a video like this could indeed trigger Trump into a frenzy, possibly thinking "the schools are endorsing it by showing it to kids during class".)

They want Americans to keep blindly thinking they're number one.

If enough Americans actually realise that there are a lot of things citizens in other countries get better, they'd revolt. Instead, they prop up the corrupt government and corporations by blindly accepting the shit they have to put up with because they are "the best.

I thought the internet would solve this problem, but, well, we've all seen the maga's. Also I was dealing with some muppet only last night on YouTube who was still convinced that everything was better in America.
