oh, the irony!
but then, it's all a dance, well-reahearsed. One side makes a step, the other side makes a step, one side kicks their "dear partner" in the shin with a friendly smile, the other party stabs them in the back and sends their commiserations. And as all big and small side players climb off to this or that side (or are dragged, screaming and protesting, but end up off the fence anyway) it all leads, slowly but surely, to an incident, or an "incident" and then a strictly localized, strictly planetised, friendly all-out nuke exchange.
And don't tell me homo sapiens is past that stage because "sapiens", because two strictly localised global-ish conflicts, because we know it pays much better to trade, than to wage a war, etc, etc.

Perfectly true, and the longer we leave it before starting the harder it will be to achieve an equitable outcome. Eventually it will become completely impossible to contain the dragon and we - that is everyone other than the Chinese Communist Party - will have a long time to wish something had been done when the opportunity still existed.
