back to article Doxxing nixed by Hong Kong courts, again

Hong Kong’s government has won a temporary injunction that bans “doxxing”, the practice of publishing private information about an individual in the hope it causes them discomfort. The Special Administrative Region’s Secretary for Justice applied to the High Court for the injunction to protect “Judicial Officers and their …

    Doxxing = Kangaroo Court

Doxxing is not just for Lols, it has the potential to create serious harm for the target regardless of their culpability.

It's one of those areas where social media and the Internet are extremely negative.

It's just despairing that Hong Kong only banned this because its functionaries were the targets. It should simply be banned for everyone.

Some days it feels as though we've gone back to the middle ages....

Aaah yes, a new law banning something that you cannot stop.

Maybe someone should tell them about Pastebin...

You can't stop theft, or murder, or assault, so guess may as scrap those laws as well.

Doxxing is evil, no question there

Unfortunately, it is apparently becoming a way to resist China's hold on what used to be a free country.

And, if it is the only way to point blame to someone abusing their power and/or authority, well it remains evil but becomes understandable.

The real issue is that China wants control, the Chinese way, and Hong Kong wants the freedom it was used to.

It can only end in tears.

At some point, democratic opposition gives way to revolution. Unfortunately, there is no "you are now at war" sign to say when it is "okay" to kill the opposition.

Doxxing is and should be universally illegal. But is a useful tool in war, and it is expected that at some point along the continuum, it will be used. Just like killing people. How you feel about any particular incident depends on which side you are on, and where you believe the line should be regarding this particular tactic.

Personally, when you have police shooting bullets into crowds, I would consider doxxing to be on the lower end of the acceptable responses.

Godspeed to the democrats of Hong Kong and elsewhere.

Maybe El Reg want to add that the previous Chief Executive (top puppet in charge of Hong Kong) has openly called for the names and details of teachers who attended protests and even using the protests as teaching material in schools.

Only situation where I completely and wholeheartedly agree with the idea of ACAB is in relation to the Hong Kong and Chinese administration.

I guess they don't have much choice though, since their families will be disappeared if they disobey the mainland.
