back to article Seeing as real 5G isn't even here yet, you could just get a OnePlus instead of an iPhone 12 and save loadsamoney

After a long hiatus, OnePlus returned to the budget category earlier this year with the OnePlus Nord. Now it is following up with two more budget devices: the OnePlus Nord N10 5G, and the entry-level LTE-only OnePlus Nord N100. Priced at £329 in the UK (and €349 in Europe), and landing next month, the OnePlus Nord N10 5G …

    Cheaper phone, bigger battery

    WHY??

And it's not just them, either, lots of phones are like this. A shame - if reviews one the Nord or even more expensive phones had said "amazing battery life" I'd probably have bought it, instead of sticking with what I have.

Yeah, it appear a lot of cheaper phones have bigger batteries. A bigger battery (say 5000 instead of 4000 mAh, 20% difference) can offset the lack of an OLED display, which, according to Google, can save between 15% and 60% power consumption over an LED display when watching YouTube. So, don't go on battery size alone to estimate battery life - find a testing website which uses a test that approximates your use (eg, browsing or watching video) for your existing phone and your prospective purchase.

Naturally it depends on how you use it. It may be that the more price sensitive buyers are younger and thus more likely to play games, in which case the CPU/GPU and not the screen is likely to be the biggest power draw.

The headline spec is the screen size. With lower powered devices, the PCB can be smaller (fewer specialist chips & less heat from CPU), which then leaves space inside (because the overall size is dictated by the screen).

The simplest thing to do is put in a bigger battery, which gives another selling point.

Adding a big battery also makes the flimsy plastic enclosure more rigid.

If you have to ask the price,

you shouldn't be getting an iPhone.

"If you have to ask the price, - you shouldn't be getting an iPhone."

I'd change that to say "you shouldn't be getting a top spec current iPhone" I swapped but I paid only £100 more than my other half paid for her Nord by dropping a version and getting a XS over an 11 when I moved to Apple. What's the betting my XS will be supported long after the Nord too?

    Nord is kind of disappointing...

The other half and I are long time OnePlus fans. We've been using them since the 3 and up until now have been very, very pleased. I recently went to the appley dark side and the boss lady has picked up a Nord. It's been terrible with some of the flakiest firmware OP have produced so far. She has stuck with it and now the phone only randomly resets once a week (at the start it was sometimes twice a day) and fails to pick up one in 5 or 6 calls. We're crossing our fingers for the next FW update to hopefully sort it out as they are promising. Have a good look at the OP support forums before considering a Nord.

    £329

I remember when the 1+ cost 329 and was a genuine flagship contender. Over the years prices have crept up to the point the 1+ costs as much as an iPhone. Guess the whole iPhone Pro and Apple's redefinition of "flagship" as "over a grand" has muddied the waters. Remember when we thought a phone costing £1000 was a one-off gimmick, now Apple has convinced us it's the norm!

My 6T is still going strong but for my use, the top-spec Nord sounds pretty nice. Although I am not a huge fan of OxygenOS.

Hmmm, OnePlus for the same price as Apple? Not sure about that. Sure they have been creeping up in price since the original OnePlus One, but at £549, the flagship OnePlus 8T is still healthily cheaper that the £849 iPhone 12. Still not cheap, but a lot cheaper!

My OnePlus 3 is still going just fine after more than 4 years...
