back to article China lashes India’s app ban, calls for return to ‘win-win cooperation’

China has expressed its displeasure with India’s decision to ban 118 apps that originate in the Middle Kingdom. A Q&A posted by China’s Indian embassy features Counselor Ji Rong proclaiming “We are seriously concerned and firmly oppose the Indian government to prohibit the Mobile APPs with Chinese background with the excuse of …

"Which is where things get interesting, because Chinese diplomats recently warned Australia that its calls for the World Health Organisation to probe the origins of the novel coronavirus could see Chinese consumers lose interest in Australian products."

It is called "coercive diplomacy" (aka "or-else diplomacy").

Still much nicer than the "continuation of diplomacy by other means" which used to be so commonplace.

Such statements can't help the perception (in certain quarters) that this novel coronavirus is not an accidental, natural occurence and the Chinese goverment did everything they could cover it up and hide it from the rest of the world.

Nothing to hide, nothing to fear, and all that.

    Starting to bite?

Sounds like China is finally starting to feel the effects of the rest of the world taking a dislike to their perceived/actual (delete as you see fit) treatment of anyone who disagrees with them.

The problem with being a bully is that once one person stands up to you others tend to follow

    DoubleSpeak FTW!!!!

“The Chinese government has always required Chinese overseas companies to abide by international rules and operate in compliance with laws and regulations.”

Wha? Of course not. Party-sponsored industrial espionage ISN'T complying with the laws of the people you are stealing from. Coercing smaller economic competitors or regional rivals every time you possibly can, somehow tends to cause them to question your benign intent. To say nothing of forced intellectual property exchange to operate within China proper. Amazing innit?

No, I think it's about time China starts being held to the same standard as the rest of the civilized world.

China will only obey or call on international law when/if it benefits them. All other times it will ignore it. Militarised islands in the South China Sea, anyone?

    Dont piss off your buyer

The Chinese made the mistake of pissing off the country with whom they have their second largest trade surplus (overall #3 behind US and the multi state EU). Only an idiot starts a border war with a country that’s a destination for your finished goods, a source of your raw material, AND a competitor for your manufacturing base. The Chinese, for all their supposed smarts, did that.

The app ban is not even the first round, TikTok was banned a month ago, and stopped working in India the day after the ban. Huawei/ZTE have been banned from all 5G contracts. Chinese construction companies have been debarred from all the expressway and high speed line construction projects (the Mumbai Ahmedabad 515km high speed line is being extended to a 1500km Delhi-Mumbai 350km/h line, plus 6-8 other lines). Chinese goods imports have been hit with mandatory inspection requirement at ports, causing them to pile up for months without clearance.

The loss in exports and business value has probably hit about $25 billion now, with more to come. And to add:

PUBG app ban: Tencent loses $34 billion in value in two days

The best the Chinese have managed in response is to beat up some Indian gold traders in Hong Kong.

Japan makes good fast trains. Modi should give them a call.

The Mumbai - Delhi high speed line IS a Japanese collaboration - it is slated to run E5/E6 series Shinkansens.

And hopefully a large percentage of the rest of the world will follow in India's footsteps. We can't negotiate with unreliable China, so we have to oppose them. Given time, they will realise Xi lead them to their downfall.
