back to article Trump backs Oracle as potential TikTok buyer

Donald Trump has signaled his support of Oracle as a buyer for contentions made-in-China social media app TikTok. "I think that Oracle would be certainly somebody that could handle it," the US President said at a press conference in Yuma, Arizona, on Tuesday. He also called Trump fundraiser and Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison …

Is it just me, or isn't that the same thing as hoping Oracle dies as a company?

I'm sure Larry takes business advice from Trump very seriously. Not.

Bankruptcy No. 1: The Trump Taj Mahal, 1991

Bankruptcy No. 2: Trump Castle, 1992

Bankruptcy No. 3: Trump Plaza and Casino, 1992

Bankruptcy No. 4: Plaza Hotel, 1992

Bankruptcy No. 5: Trump Hotels and Casinos Resorts, 2004

Bankruptcy No. 6: Trump Entertainment Resorts, 2009

Remember, casinos are businesses that normally "print money". And during the 18 year period over which he bankrupted those casinos leaving US banks out over $1B (which is why he has to borrow from German, Russian & Chinese banks), the US economy grew by over 50%

Apparently if he had simply invested the money he borrowed from his Dad into bonds and kept them until now he'd be worth *far* *more* than he did by running "businesses" into the ground.

I’d rather the Chinese government own it than Oracle

Oracle and Ellison are more evil than the Chinese government.

At least Microsoft would just kill it with neglect rather than the evil licensing that Oracle inflicts on the things it buys

How many cores does your smartphone have? 8? Rubs hands, that'll be an 8 core TikTok license then, a bargain at $1,200 per core, I tell you!

What do you mean, Big.little? A core is a core mate, cough up or bugger off!

    It does not matter

Microsoft or Oracle. If one of them buys it then it is a dead duck as far as the users are concerned. Neither of them are 'cool' and 'hip' companies in the eyes of the average teenage girl who uses the service (as I've been told by my Grandaughter).

MS did such a grand job with Skype didn't they (sic) that I fear history repeating itself if they get their hands on it.

As for Oracle? They are right up there with MS, Facebook, Google etc in the slurping of data. This will help them become no 1 until all the users go somwhere else then it will become another MySpace.

Tiktok is a perfect fit for either company. A fit that will ensure its speedy demise.

It also won't do them any good, public image wise, whether they make a success of it or not. TikTok through Government order is a poisoned chalice. It just screams to the world that you are a US government lackey and gobbling up foreign assets at the behest of the government. Not a good image.

Here we come ; Enterprise Licenses

I fully expect Oracle to buy it and then put per-core enterprise licenses that forces your phone to a single-core chip for cost reasons and will blast scary-looking advertising stating "if you don't buy our licenses we will come and audit your phone" and then have a fit when you only have a gallery app.

    Couldn't...

handle an orgy in a brothel... Oh, wait, is Mark Hurd still there? Scrap that thought. A booze-up in a brewery, no, Mark again... Hmmm, I'll have to try harder...

Couldn't manage a database in the cloud, let alone a social media platform. Yes, yes, I think that works.

You can't blame this on Mr. Hurd unless Oracle has unexpectedly novel Cloud strategy involving harps.

      He died in October 2019.

i dont understand how this works

how can the US president force any foreign company to sell to an American company? not a question on the merits of either owner but what is the legal mechanism that allows that and what does it mean for all the non-US users?

eg, can a user in Norway still download it from the appstore? can they still connect to the tiktok servers? what changes for them if the company isn't transferred?

sorry if these all sound like naive questions, i cant get my head around how any of this is supposed to work.

Re: i dont understand how this works

I don't get how it is going to work either. AFAIK there are no other social media platforms where different companies own the operations in specific territories.

Whether it will still all be one Tiktok app and depending on where you connect to the internet depends on which servers you connect to. MS or Oracle for the US, Canada and Australia and Bytedance for ROW.

Perhaps they issue a new TikTok US app which is not compatible with the Bytedance Tiktok service?

If they try and run it as a completely separate platform from the ROW they run the risk that people either abandon it because of the more limited audience or people might even run a VPN to connect to the ROW TIktok network bypassing the US servers.

    As usual

Trump making yet another stupid uninformed and dangerous suggestion. After the desinfectant incident .. after so many stupid declarations one would have normally learned something and start listening to people in the know .. but no .. yet another instance where Trump should have kept his mouth shut instead of uttering ,yet again , utter gibberish nonsensical and ridiculous discourse that even toddlers laugh at. Really .. Oracle in social media is just as ridiculous as can get. It will die the moment they own it. Just as Microsoft kills off everything they touch. Really Trump should learn to keep his big fat mouth shut.

Im getting out of here .. mine's the one with a roll of duct tape in an envelope marked Donald Trump and adressed to the white house. ( postage due )

There is no "buying" going on in the normal sense. Trump is hamstringing the Chinese corps and FORCING them to sell their interests.

The pirates of old would be very proud of Trump for seizing foreign assets this way.

Anybody else should worry that their company might be next on Trump's "American Acquisition" list. :(
