back to article Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries says it's built its own 5G kit and hopes to sell to all comers

Indian industrial conglomerate Reliance Industries has announced that it has developed its own 5G network infrastructure and hopes to offer it as a manged service to carriers worldwide. At its annual shareholder meeting on Wednesday, chairman, Mukesh Ambani, said that the group's telecoms unit had developed a "complete 5G …

    Home buying

Is there a valid reason, that here in the west, we have a major problem building our own kit ? Have we lost our know-how is is there something else afoot ?

Cost. Living expenses are higher in the UK, so wages are higher too by necessity.

There’s little detail here - 5G was designed to move away from hardware and towards software as far as is reasonably practical. You can deploy a 5G core (SA or NSA) without owning any hardware (granted, your Azure/AWS bills will be something to behold!). It’s only the RAN side where you need specialist equipment. The radio tech for 5G is crazy. Even then, a significant portion of the RAN functions can be performed in software.

These folk may well be talking about a software only core offering. If that’s the case I don’t see how the UK could ever hope to compete. India has a large number of STEM graduates in a culture that values education, and significantly lower wages than the UK. The UK *could* produce a product, but it wouldn’t sell.

        Re: Home buying

Makes sense. We've gone from being a mostly hardware supplier (still do, racks and all, for some African customers) to a company that deploys carrier grade voice mail system, online charging, SMSCs and so on straight into customers' service centres as virtualised solutions. That core network should be less about the hardware just seems natural.

    Great disruptor

Will be glad if Reliance can pull this off . They can then sell it to UK Telcos who are still bickering over 5G and Huawei, seeking govt. subsidies.

I have wondered if Brexit was in reality a covert scheme to accelerate the Indian takeover of the UK. Revenge for the Bengal Famine at last.

(I am only being mildly ironic. My family is Anglo-British.)

The (now) HomeSec was very clear in her messaging to India about the relaxation of visa requirements as part of any Anglo-Indian post-Brexit deal. All very good news for PIOs and their families. A heartfelt thank you to all who voted Brexit.

In related news supporting your theory, the two seats reserved in Indian parliament (lower house) for Anglo-Indians were recently scrapped.

Now waiting for reserved seats for Indian-Anglos in House of Commons.

    Interesting

Jio use Samsung for 4G. So a bolt on to that for non stand alone, or something completely new in stand alone?

The latter is easier, but rather less useful at present.

Anyone taking bets on when this is branded a security risk?

By Trump? almost certainly as there will be minimal US tech in it if any (particularly if using ARM rather than Intel/AMD), obviously I'm assuming Trump will get re-elected and so is even more likely to do daft stuff.

    Joke

    I, for one, welcome

this manged service by Reliance Industries.

That is what you called it, or what they called it. I'm slightly curious which, but please keep it.

Cue customers tearing their hair out :-)

    WTF?

    Whuh

I really don't understand the whole 5G frenzy, other than it being yet another herd hysteria.

4G is so far past what most people are getting in their first-world homes, it's not funny.

      Re: Whuh

Example: (sorry, missed the edit window)

I'm getting >25Mbs here on my phone over a kilometre away from the nearest antenna. At local peak time. I routinely get over 100, closer.

5G's spectra would struggle to get that (25Mbs) at 100m at 4am. Just simple physics.

If nothing else, think of the colossal infrastructure costs just to regain in suburbia the coverage you currently take for granted with 4G. That money doesn't just rain from the sky like in Magic Pudding Land: if they spend it, they'll charge it back to you, over time, via your contracts. They _have to_. So you'll be paying more, for more-restricted service. Walk outside the cities/suburbs/towns'centres... oh, no data.

      IoT(meme) aside, wtf?

Other than ShinyShiny hysteria, I don't get the urgency nor the drama.

Upvoted but remember the plan is for the higher Gs to eventually eat the spectrum of the lower Gs.

        Re: Whuh

Investment still needed though. Telcos have not yet realised and unleashed the full potential of 4G speeds, which technically should be good enough for most. They are balking at further investments, despite splurging millions on the spectrum.

        Meanwhile in UK:

Any right minded business would not tolerate such laxity of purpose. Ditto 5G spectrum. Having paid millions(again) for spectrum, they are not investing in new masts, poles, Antenna (Huawei drama notwithstanding) for more than 4 years. Just drip feeding the media and OFCOM about the wonders of 5G. Ground reality very barren and almost non existent. But happy to sell very expensive shiny handsets !

Old analogy of the Jumbo jet. Build and they will come. Here it is reverse. Sell handsets and make them wait !> Wonder who is driving this agenda.
