    Apple probably starting to worry that their brand will be damaged if they manufacture in mainland China

      Manufacturing in China is also getting more and more expensive relative to other countries like India, and COVID has taught everyone that having your whole supply chain concentrated in a single location can be a problem even beyond political concerns.

      Companies everywhere are revisiting this, because they were damn lucky the pandemic's peak in China coincided with planned shutdowns for China's New Year which reduced its impact. They are probably thinking "what if it had hit a few months earlier, and we had major shortages right before Christmas shopping season?" (or in Apple's case, the September release of the new iPhone)

    I have many colleagues and friends in Hsinchu, and they tell me that life is more or less normal there, much more so than over here anyway. No wonder that's where they are planning a new factory.

    Apple's belief in self sufficiency for what it views as critical technologies would certainly make them want to take control of their own display production for the iPhone. Micro LEDs may first be practical for watches before phones, but once they have them on watches expect phones to follow on their heels.
