back to article Dot-com price rises on their way over the next four years: ICANN approves Verisign contract, walks off with $20m

The price of dot-coms will steadily increase over the next four years following DNS overseer ICANN's controversial renewal of Verisign's contract to run the top-level domain. The wholesale price of a dot-com is $7.85. That will almost certainly increase by seven per cent starting in 2021 and each year thereafter until the …

And they don't mind slashing .org's community registration remit when there's money to be made for lining their own pockets.

Registration should be non-profit by law

It should be illegal to profit from domain name registration. Meet operating expenses, ok. Profit, absolutely not. This is so corrupt it's outrageous.

It's about time governments started kicking the till draws

The trouble is that the US Government is staffed by fools who have their hands in the same cash drawers so they can't exactly kick it closed.

*Everything* is an opportunity to make lots of money. Even if it's unethical or outright evil.

Verisign has a monopoly on .com

So doesn't anti-trust and similar legislation kick in here?

Nonsense, if a customer is dissatisfied with their service from Verisign, they can just choose a different TLD!

Classic case of killing itself. Something else will appear to replace this system sooner or later.

    Dear ICANN

    Screw you!

Just because someone submitted a pre-filled form does not mean their opinion is not valid. The form had to express their opinion, otherwise they wouldn't have taken the time to submit it! You can justify it all you want, you are still cheating us. So, screw you!

ICANN needs to be brought under the control of an internationally accountable body - eg the WTO. Its current staff/directors all need to be shown the door - ideally a door with bars on it due to whats just a fancy form of theft - together with all their co-conspiritors - ie the monopoly domain contract winners, and all the US govt officials who've taken payoffs from the whole shady racket.

Now how do we the "little people" do that?

      Broken beyond repair

Create a parallel internet. Decentralised, poison-proof DNS, new address space, tunnel everything through IP4 and IP6, non-spoofable From address for e-mail.

That's what we could do. Pigyback on everybody else's fat tubes.

It appended a $20m stipulation to the contract signing, requiring Verisign pay ICANN $4m a year for the next five years in order to “educate the wider ICANN community about security threats.”
