British police are saying coronavirus-related fraud reports have spiked by 400 per cent over the past six weeks as the COVID-19 illness continues its inexorable march through humanity. Although absolute numbers of reports are low, perhaps kept that way because the public now knows Action Fraud is largely useless, the National …

    Joined-Up Government

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Education Secretary Gavin Williamson said there are currently no plans to shut down bars and restaurants and order people off the streets, but that ministers would be guided by the scientific evidence.

"We will take the incredibly tough decisions that are sometimes needed in order to ensure the safety of the population,” he said.

Absolute bollocks. He's being dragged kicking and screaming into action because the pictures are coming in from hospitals in Italy.

And he couldn't even get the pub shutdown right and order that they be closed at 3pm or something. It's not as if the government wasn't warned about what would happen when France shut their pubs down.

And of course, as he keeps stressing, everything he does is being driven by science.

But which science? The science that says it's okay to have 80% infected and millions dead, "many loved ones will die", to secure herd immunity, or the science which says it's best to save as many lives as possible?

I expect the only reason Johnson so quickly moved to that amazing "we will pay everyone's wages" is because he's utterly desperate to have his u-turn succeed to save his skin.

It is because the average age of Conservative Party members is over 65 and the age group that delivered his electoral success was mostly aged over 50.

        Agreed.

Cummings' big plan to let the virus run through the population and bugger the consequences got kicked into touch the moment the Italian deathtoll started climbing.

Boris subsequently shat himself, did a quick 180 and then put a spending package in place that the Corbynista couldn't even begin to dream of.

        Interesting times.

Actually what the country needs now, to keep a lid on this, is a likeable character with good media skillz and the ability to lie through their back teeth on air without flinching. And Boris is the ideal man for the job.

Indeed. Cummings is behind the UK's 'science-based' approach and the two talking dummies either side of Johnson are so you might actually believe he isn't.

Would you really expect the Education Secretary to know all the details of a fast moving situation far bigger than their department? Especially when they'll be swamped with education issues and Central Policy is flip-flopping on the fly?*

    * That's not really a criticism - Even Churchill would have been hard-pressed to manage this war

Every PM decision being made at the moment would have Churchills 'Action this day' green ink. Potential UK virus fatalities put the Dunkirk evacuation in the shade (we faced losing quarter of a million men and with it the war)

With the massive spending announcements and simultaneous removal of much tax revenue (deferred for now and much will be abandoned) any company making a profit should seriously consider volunteering money for support efforts. I'd certainly support laws nailing any profiteering activity.

Johnson is so far out of his depth it is only the blubber keeping him from drowning.

Well, at least there's now an argument to sign up for the Sun or Daily Mirror

Sewers and treatment plants are getting choked with newsprint and paper towels which are currently being used as substitute toilet paper -- they don't disintegrate when wet the way TP is designed to.

    "The Wogs Begin at Calais"

A poll of Britain's intelligentsia found:

    .

‘Who has introduced the best measures to combat the spread of coronavirus?’

Out of the 3,921 people who took the poll, an overwhelming majority stated Britain had done the best job.

65 percent (2,518) of people believed the Johnson Government had taken the best steps to tackle the virus.

This was compared to the eight percent (342) who voted for France, and the eight percent (327) who voted for Italy.

Spain was thought to be the least capable out of the group, with only three percent (148) respondents believing it had introduced the best measures.

BRITAIN must not delay the end of the transition period to avoid the fallout from a "financial Chernobyl" in the eurozone caused by the impact of Covid-19.

Er, the talks are for the UK to carry on trading with the EU. If there really will be a eurozone "financial Chernobyl", no talks, no problem?
