back to article It's dangerous to go alone! Take Uncle Sam and the Netherlands: Duo join naval task force into China's backyard

HMS Queen Elizabeth is still on track to deploy to the Far East in 2021 – although whether it will actually sail through the South China Sea is yet to be explicitly confirmed – with escorting warships from the US and the Netherlands, according to reports. The UK Defence Journal recently reported that Big Lizzie will rehearse …

The two-headed eagle generally means it used to be associated with an empire.

It's used by more countries than just Russia, and pops up elsewhere as well.

Different OPFOR though, it's not as if the Chinese were doing brilliantly in '42 either.

the carrier will take around 24 F-35B fighter jets plus helicopters. Thanks to the small size of the Royal Navy and the high value of the carrier,
Hopefully also due to the high value of the crew.

And will these be American F-35Bs, or British and Dutch F-35Bs? If this is just show-boating, an imperial riposte, then surely it would be better to equip it with Spitfires. Maybe a couple of Mini Coopers equipped as submarines. That'd better catch the attention of Chinese investors.

    1. SkippyBing

I believe 1 British and 1 US F-35 squadron. The slow build up of UK F-35 is partly explained by there not being much point in buying many pre-Block 4 as they'd need upgrading anyway. Plus the cost is coming down with each successive batch ordered.

    2. MrXavia

I'd love to see spitfires flying from it!

      1. Mark 85

I'd pay to see some mini-Coopers launched via a the catapults.

I fear that would be impractical; with their ever-increasing size they'll soon weigh more than an F35.

          1. I ain't Spartacus Gold badge

Also, no catapults. But they've got that ski-jump for launching, so you only need a few rockets.

Do the Navy still keep those JATO things around?

Nope. Fishermen aren't worried about that, any more than they are worried about accidentally getting dragged by whales. And remember, there are more whales in the ocean than submarines.

    Those are dangerous waters

My guess is that the Chinese will generously provide the round-eye flotilla with a suitable 24/7 escort of modern Chinese warships to ensure that the foreigners come to no harm..

It'd be awfully nice if they did, intelligence gathering is so much easier when it comes to you.

'...defence secretary Ben Wallace was quoted by the publication as saying: "It is definitely our intention, though, that the carrier strike group will be able to be a wholly UK sovereign deployable group".'

With Trump doing his best to dismantle NATO and the Brexit loons destroying our European alliances, Britain will have no one else to sail with in a few years.

Unless Farage plans to have the Royal Navy join a Russian fleet. I wouldn't put anything past that weasly gobshite.

  12. Kaufman

The Chinese builds more war ships than the entire navy of the UK every year. Not even the US would dare send a carrier group to poke the dragon. China could simply dispatch a few fishing boats and a couple of their gargantuan coast guard cutters to block the Brits and then they'll be forced to turn around in humiliation.

    1. jake Silver badge

" Not even the US would dare send a carrier group to poke the dragon."

So where, exactly, has the USS Ronald Reagan Carrier Group been deployed these last several months?
