back to article Intel unveils Project Athena: Chipzilla tells lappy makers how to build their own kit

This week at Computex in Taiwan, Chipzilla finally shared the specific details about Project Athena – its valiant attempt to tell PC makers how to do their job. This “innovation program” [PDF] focuses on laptop design and choice of components, but not the components made by Intel. Instead, it aims to create specifications for …

    Not to be confused with...

    ... the real Project Athena

    So another Centrino?

No, this is far more expensive. Clearly it will be amazing.

With the ease of hacking Intel CPUs who would want anything with Intel inside? It sounds as if they are afraid that AMD will take over in the consumer market as well as the bit barn.

PS3/4 controllers on PC are actually pretty common practice.

it is, its even supported by Steam, but the complexity of doing it reminds me of the trials and tribulations of getting sound cards to work with old DOS games

      Just because..

It's not technically possible does not make it impossible...

Where there is a will and all that.

      Was my thought too...

As I do the very thing myself! It's also very easy to do...

My kids have been doing it for a long long time.

      Over Wi-Fi?

No, not over WiFi - it uses Bluetooth.

Intel should be more focused on how to build chips that weren't full of security holes that need to be crippled to make them less insecure and the less said about their disastrous efforts to go 10nm the better.

    Stones and glass houses.

The whole "old laptops don't work well enough" is ridiculous, in most cases. For my home usage I still use a Lenovo T420 i5 with 8Gigs of RAM and the original spinning rust HDD running MX Linux. It still works wonderfully for my purposes and I occasionally spin up a different distro in a VM to have a look. I'd like to buy a new laptop with maybe 32 or 64 Gig of RAM but that won't be soon and if I go that root I'll make sure it has AMD inside. I'll probably put an SSD in my T420 and maybe buy a T440 with 16 Gig of RAM next.

So, other than for gaming there's very little most of us can't do using an older laptop.

My HP 6720s from 2008 with a massive 4GB of RAM is still running fine with Mint and a dash of Cinnamon.

I smell desperation in this move. My HP laptop with a mere i3 is now in its 9th year of service, and I'm certainly not alone in that situation. This is so unlike machines from pre-2006 vintage. Took out the optical drive and put instead an SSD from day one, with Linux on that (for some reason Windows 7 on the HDD is very slow, but it's a non-issue). I can't think of a reason to change, other than being limited in games I can play. But I take this as an advantage, as I get to do other stuff with my time. Else, dosbox works fine!!

Even the video produced for the occasion featured somebody playing Anthem (the video game) with a wireless PlayStation 3 controller on PC – something that’s not technically possible.

There's loads of tutorials on getting s PS3 pad to work on PC.

More pressing question is why the hell you'd want to play Anthem.

Why don't they first learn how to make chips, and then 5G antennas...

Seriously, more vulnerabilities in the side channel attacks. The chips I spent top pound for are being more and more crippled with each "fix".
