back to article Veteran vulture Andrew Orlowski is offski after 19 years at The Register

Bill Clinton was president of the United States when I first started at The Register, mobile phones (and anything else "mobile") were low-rez monochrome chunks of plastic, and politicians were slack-jawed children when it came to technology. Some things don't change, but today one thing does. After 19 years – the first seven …

No, Piers is just a professional shit-stirrer with a face born to slap, clueless about whatever subject he's meddling with and fuckwitted in his willingness to consider he may be wrong, which is pretty much all the time. Jeremy Vine is of the same ilk.

You do Andrew a grave disservice. At the very least, Andrew's articles were thought-provoking and had a human angle rather than just being an opinion-diktat on how we all should think. Unlike Piers, you could persuade him to reconsider with facts rather than uninformed opinion.

Whether you agree with some of his opinions or not, his talent will be missed and I, for one, wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

I'd just come on here to say that. In fact I was even considering creating a sock-puppet account called something like Andrew Orlowski's Postbox in order to complain about him going.

How will the poor thing ever get attention now?*

I've found myself agreeing with Andrew O far more times than I've disagreed, so I've defended him in the comments a few times from the raging mobs. For example, he was one of the early voices being rather rude about Google, when most of the media had their tongues so far up the Google collective arsehole that they could clean their Google Glasses for them...

Although I'm pretty sure that Andrew is also the one to blame for me buying a Windows phone. Well 2 in fact. He was very clear about both the upsides and downsides of the system, and I'm still a happy Win Phone 8.1 user - still haven't bothered to upgrade to 10, also on his original recommendation.

Andrew, you are the Cassandra of mobile phone OSes. Or is that the Jonah? Your Blackberry (and lesser) Windows Phone love have entirely failed to keep them at the top. Which is a shame.

I hope post-Reg life treats you well, and fills your life with pink fluffy unicorns dancing on rainbows. Or beer. Or whatever...

    Ave atque vale

Thank you for the informative, entertaining and, occasionally, irritating articles, sir. They, and you, will be missed.

    Best wishes.

  55. Jude Bradley

Enjoyed your articles since I started reading reg in the last century. Best of luck in your new venture, whatever that may be.

  56. Glenn Hunt

My favourite articles have always been yours and Ashlee's. What a loss for El Reg. You will be missed here, but glad to hear you will still be writing.

I started reading El Reg in the 90s and will greatly miss your writing here. Hopefully your blog will be cleared of tumble-weed and we'll still be able to follow your musings there. Good luck for the future and at least you can stop photographing post boxes now! ;)

    bye! Miss you...

Please keep writing -- you have an uncommon combination of wit and intelligence.

    Well done!

Andrew, you've been here since I started visiting the site, like a regular at the local, and I'm going to miss seeing you. I've enjoyed your writings and musings over the years, as well as your well-informed opinion pieces (which I did not always agree with, though I could not argue that they were poorly written- just that the conclusions didn't always mesh with my own, given the facts). My hat off to you for your work and dedication to critical and timely journalism, and not being the least bit timid about calling a spade a spade (as many of The Register's contributors have also done).

I now wonder who will feature as El Reg's senior curmudgeon, as they are some large shoes to fill. One of my other favorite (print) publications, Stereophile, is also transitioning to a new generation, although John Atkinson is staying on as a technical editor, and he's groomed his replacement for some time. I wonder if Andrew has done the same, finding another writer of wry wit, with a hard-nose and critical eye to follow in his footsteps.

All the same, I wish you the best on your future, and the gods bless whoever takes over as the Reg's voice.

    Thank you

Your articles have provoked a wide range of responses but no matter how much I have agreed or disagreed with your points, I have always enjoyed reading them.

Thank you and good luck for the future. You will be missed by many more than those you have regular contact with.

    Questions

Is this a case of ElReg {cough}restructuring{cough} or are fresh victi writers in the wings?

If new people are incoming, are the Vulture Central beancounters doing an IBM on us?

    A distant relative?

Thanks for all your articles Mr O. and good luck and fortune elsewhere.

I noted recently that the writing credits for some of Bobby Vee's early 1960's songs is given as Anne Orlowski ( which i believe to be Gene Pitney using his mother's maiden name).

Not the most common surname and given that you're particularly strong on copyrights i did wonder** if you had an extra interest in that, being a relative of said Anne and Gene. Or just a coincidence?

** even more so now you've written that you started in the San Francisco office.

I think it was SLC who wrote:

"Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience."

    But you already know that.

Thanks, man. It's been fun. I owe you a beer ... or three :-)

Leyden, Page, Worstall, Haines (sadly, nothing ElReg or anyone could do about that tragic loss) and now Orlowski. Those were days when giants walked the earth. I'm sure there are good people and fine reporters working at today's Register - but they have some very oversized boots to fill.

Have a pint on this glorious Friday, I trust you'll at least be partaking later today in the traditional manner.

  78. anoco

    You always made me think...

...once I finished the first paragraph, "Wait, is this another Orlowsky piece?"

Then I continued thinking, "What is wrong with this guy?", "Did the forceps pinch an important part of his brain?", "Is he a Russian troll?", "How can he be so smart and so dumb at the same time?", "Is the Reg keeping him here to say they're diverse?", "What is wrong with this guy?", "Doesn't he know that he acts like click bait in this site?", "He writes so well, why is he writing to the wrong audience?", "Does he enjoy pissing people off?", "Wow, I agreed with him once!!!", "What's wrong with this guy?".

Well, I enjoyed your articles as much as walking on a rocky road with no shoes. I can't say I'll miss your opinion, but I wish you good luck with your life transition. Maybe now is the time to take some Lysergics, and hope to re-wire that part damaged by the forceps. Or take the red pill and start writing for the good side.

You played a major part in the best err... whatever El Reg is.

I know - above and beyond description and the hope San Francisco bureau is still there.

    Many many thanks.

  84. Tom Paine

    Thanks

...for forcing me to go read the actual science of climatology so that I /knew/ the denialist BS was BS, rather than merely strongly suspecting it.

I stopped reading El Reg for, what, 5? 6? years because it was so enraging. Delighted to find the new-old-Reg doesn't make me want to take bite out of my coffee mug any more.

PS ...but bring back the "Integrity? We've heard of it" and "YOUR PC is broken and I'VE got a problem?" schwag!
