back to article Spending watchdog: UK.gov must say who will prop up Verify from March 2020. C'mon, you've had six months!

UK.gov still has "no meaningful" blueprint on how the disastrous Verify programme will be propped up when the public sector pulls funding in 2020, according to an influential Parliamentary Committee. Just 3.9 million citizens have signed up to the pan-Whitehall assurance ID platform since its launch in 2016 – some 300,000 more …

    A radical thought

Spin off GDS as a private company. Its so far cost HMG a small fortune with bugger all to show for that, so let it and all who sail in her sink or swim on its own.

    Clusterfuck * 2

The government has now decided to stop public funding to Verify in 2020. Before then, it has a duty to get this programme working properly for existing users, such as people claiming Universal Credit

If the DWP start a backup verification plan just for UC now, then might just get it done in time for next year but it might not be needed. If they sit on their hands and say Verify is not their problem, they run the risk of yet another UC catastrophe.

Government IT, eh? Expensive, unfit for purpose, or both, pick any one.

"Relying on the private sector being able to sell services more cheaply"

I think they're getting this slightly wrong. It should say "Relying on the private sector being able to build services more cheaply than anything it could build or buy for itself".

What they sell it to the government for is a completely different matter.

Particularly if said government has already splayed itself over a convenient barrel.

    e-Residency in Estonia

Why is it that Estonia can provide an e-residency system that has largely solved these problems, but UK gov can't? Perhaps UK gov should just get UK citizens to register with Estonia and then use that for ID verification. I daresay it would be far cheaper.
