Then why are the prices for any SSD with a capacity greater than 1TB still stupidly high?

Yeh they have to do something. Maybe 2 128's in 1 physical drive to enable RAID or some kind of RAID with microSD for long term storage. Anything really, all we have now is wildly over priced low capacity hardware.
At the very least, you shouldn't look at your storage option and say to yourself I had more than that 15 years ago.
