back to article Up up and Huawei in my beautiful buffoon: Trump sparks panic by tying tech kit ban, charges to China trade negotiations

Efforts to pressure the White House into banning Huawei hardware from America's networks may have backfired. President Trump appears to have jumped the establishment's tracks, and tied the banishment of the Chinese manufacturer's kit to his ongoing trade tiff with China – meaning any deal hammered out with the Middle Kingdom …

    Boundaries

This is not blurring the boundaries so much as clearing them away.

American national security nowadays is all about trade deals and often criminal charges arise from trumped up charges based on sketchy laws invented to support protectionism.

Quite. We're talking about the same administration that is prepared to stand up before a judge and say that the import of Canadian aluminum [sic] and German cars represents a security threat.

I don't think Trump has any concept of "boundaries".

He can go beyond his real estate crook mindset. Sure, in real estate deal these dirty tricks could be the norm, maybe including some help from mafias fro blackmailing and ransoms, but thinking you can act the same way on another far bigger stage is just foolish - and the long term damage a bigger issue.

      Re: Boundaries

I would say it's all about sketchy laws and trade deals which failed to take into account protection of the national economy against unfair trade practices, unbalanced tariffs, illegal IP theft, and subjection of essential industrial capacity to the predations of an utterly totalitarian country having the world's largest population. Those "sketchy laws and trade deals" were made in order to line the pockets of the shareholders (domestic and foreign) of global mega-corporations.

I'd take the US situation and policies in a minute, compared the German position or that of the French. As for the UK, one cannot say which evil the government is going to choose.

    "Criminal charges" ?

Isn't that where you start by saying what law has been broken?

    Preferably with evidence.

    That wasn't illegally collected.

From a source that will stand in court and testify.

I suppose that's what is supposed to happen, but then the article did say:

Which is an excellent wind-up indeed.

Didn't we already know this? Hasn't it always been the case that the more money you throw at justice, be that a court case or security or whatever, the more likely the result will go your way, never mind what the law actually says.

    We knew anyway

The whole spat with Huawei was always trade, US attempts to bully the rest of the West into buying its crap, and nothing to do with security or evidence, for that matter.

The US MIL/TECH/INDUSTRIAL complex has been trying to get a McCarthy type witch hunt going - and Trump hasnt bought it and is frankly running a risk by exposing it. He has basically called it for what it is.

The witch hunt is likely nothing to do with the administration - its the other vested interests in what appears to be a pretty corrupt structure of special interests, lobbying, and TLA security organisations who want more budget. Good on him for that, if nothing else.

Yes, in this case it seems that Trump's lack of subtlety and his refusal to respect traditional civil service legalistic working methods have taken him directly to the correct conclusion: this is an act of economic warfare (a.k.a. Trumpish negotiation) and we can cancel it as part of a deal.

    biter bit

' former Republican representative for Michigan, Mike Rogers warned against "any linkage" between the issue, and urged the White House to drop the idea of tying national security and criminal charges to trade "like a hot potato."'

Isn't linking trade to national security exactly what the telecoms companies and their Republican patsies are thought to have done ?

The issues, which Trade Representative Lightheiser has again listed in recent days, are nothing new. It seems, indeed, a national security flaw to allow cheap (because capital- and contract-subsidized) cell infrastructure into western economies. On top of those realities, Chinese law requires explicitly that HuaWei do the Party Chairman's bidding when commanded. I say let Germany be the guinea pig in the matter, if they're so publicly sceptical.

The same goes for the national security implications of having foreign-company cars "built" in the US or UK when the engines and transmissions are built elsewhere: Such a practice really does bleed a nation not only of essential factories, but essential skills in the labor force.

Germany sloppily allowed the sale of Kukus robotics. Now it has panicked as an ever-larger percentage of Daimler shares falls into Chinese hands. Germany is a good example of nothing except "wishful thinking about the glories that will fall to them from that enormous Chinese market."
