Linking to the list...
are you not linking to the list here?
even though it's not a direct link... You are telling people where they can get it...
2 faced thregister!
The Wikileaks website struggled to stay online yesterday because of thousands of people looking for the leaked BNP membership list. As revealed by the Register the list of more than 10,000 BNP members was leaked early on Monday morning and although it was removed from the original blog it quickly appeared elsewhere on the net …
The list is available on thepiratebay.org and many many other places. It's so exciting I've been making molotov cocktails all week so I can go hunting at the weekend. If I worked in an insurance company I'd be finding any excuse to invalidate the policies of everyone on that list. What a great learning experience for the members of the BNP, now they'll know what it's like to hear the smashing of glass and running footsteps in the middle of the night.
Downloaded a copy this morning as WL was gone bye-bye throughout yesterday, and have just finished data-cleansing it to make it useful. Goddamn BNP morons couldn't even set it up so that the name field contains a name and the address field contains an address! (add a phone number, e-mail address and comments free text in a bunch of these, just for fun, even though there's separate fields for these).
Surprised at how many people have addresses abroad - especially in places like Saudi Arabia & Oman - how do they manage day-to-day when they don't like anyone with a "tanned" complexion?
Also, does anyone know what the appellation "activist" actually means?
Haven't found anyone I know on there yet, which is reassuring.
The article does not say that the BNP list is on wikileaks. It only says that people are looking for it there. IANAL, but I suspect that distinction is enough to keep the register out of the front line if there is any fallout about guiding people to the list. I would rather have the register spend money researching articles than fending off a pack of lawyers.
I am sure reg reader would think of wikileaks as a good place to start looking without any hints.
Sheesh. Get over yourself! The genie is well and truly out of the bottle now. It's a news story. It's got an IT angle. And the Register is only reporting on information which is now in the public domain. I suspect that the majority of people interested in finding the list will be able to do so without anyone (the Register included) having to tell them how--haven't you heard of search engines? You fail.
Well in my party* an activist is someone who does something active in the party, from delivering leaflets occaisionally to canvassing at election time to serving on party comittees to standing for elective office. I used to be an activist, serving as a constiuency party secretary for a while, but now I am a non-active member.
Some people such as police staff and more senior local government officers and civil servants are deemed to be in "politically restricted" posts and cannot be activists for ANY political party though they can be non-active members.
* The sandals, beards and woolly hats one, as opposed to the BNP which is the jackboots, toothbrush moustaches and steel helmets one.
If ignorance is considered a pre-requisite of being a BNP member we've got a new list developing right here on the Reg.
I heard somewhere that the only thing worth writing about is that which you know.
Never before has a concept been so appropriate and so ignored at the same time.
GOD BLESS OUR GREEN AND PLEASANT LAND, FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND THE RIGHT TO BE A HYPOCRITE.
BRILLIANT!
> "We don't keep logs, for obvious reasons, but we were receiving approximately 70 requests per

If they don't keep logs, how do they know that they were receiving 70 requests/second, most of which were related to the BNP story?
Which is worse, the ignorant moron voting for a knuckle dragging party or the guy threatening to fire bomb their house because of their political beliefs? Personally I feel nothing but pity for these people and can only hope that one day they'll understand the error of their ways, certainly violence is highly unlikely to change their opinion.
Grabbed my copy off some file sharing site, there are multiple torrents and the some of the comments on the torrents point to these sites.
No-one that I know is on the list, plenty of people locally are on it :)
Formatting is poor with the county sometimes being in the town, but it lists personal phone numbers and emails...
Suspect Nu Labour have had a great few days, probably published lots of stuff that they wanted to hide....
But I'm an American and I really don't understand why this is such a big deal. To me the BNP sounds like the republican party. Are people really banned by law from joining the BNP? I've read the articles, but I'm not really grasping why this is such a big deal. Please flame or enlighten me.
Thank You
I'm an American living in London, and from what I can tell, the sentiment is more like equating the BNP to the KKK. If you heard that a list of all the people who have secretly joined up with the KKK had been published for the entire USA (or maybe even just in your state), would you take a peek to see if anyone you know is on there?
It's not actually illegal to join, but it's deemed to be incompatible with certain jobs. If a BNP policeman arrested a black suspect the defence lawyers would create merry hell, for example.
It's not exactly the Republican Party, unless they've recently invested in some of those pillow cases with those natty little eye-holes.
Meanwhile, my pregnant girlfriend has been threatened online by a BNP supporter after commenting on a thread about this sort of thing. Nice to see the BNP still standing up for free speech, democracy and British values. Bastards.
These guys are worse than Republicans - they're skinheads, fascists; the guys at the top may wear suits, but further down the chain it's jackboots. The're more like a toned down KKK.
That said, you can still legally join them - they're a political party, and we don't tend to ban stuff outright in blighty unless they're actively plotting mass murder. But serving police officers are banned from membership - the police have a bed enough rep amongst racial minorities as it is.
They are not the Repugnant party those are the hard right wing Tories over here. But you have semi criminal political wing nuts over the pond. KKK like in their policies.
In the UK political parties enjoy equal air time on TV so that one party doesn't get get more cover than another (It's related to the limit that parties can spend on canvassing and adverts.)
But that ex Nazi party is banned from any broadcasting. Or rather the original party was and it had reformed to go underground.
These days they insert members as independent candidates for election. The UKIP party is another version of it. Though it isn't in any way a sharer with it.
I know someone who's name is on the list. They are not a member, they were only on the mailing list. He was very annoyed to find his name & address on it. He suspects that many people down on the list aren't members at all, but were only receiving literature or had expressed an interest in joining. Whatever people think of the BNP it is a legal party & it doesn't endorse violence (it'd be banned if it did). Labour has done enormous damage to the social fabric, economy & constitution of this country, but doesn't attract an iota of the scorn poured on the BNP. But a lot of people will face some repercussions for this from friends dropping them to possibly even murder attempts. I doubt the police will invest too much time putting guards outside people's homes.
Henley on Thames by election, where old Boris had to step down to become the Mayor of Trumpton.
2 people listed as members.
1,243 voted BNP.
So how many on their membership 10,000 .
10000 / (2 / 1243) = 6 million about 1/10th of the UK population.
So, 1 in 10 support the BNP that is kinda large when you think about it, how many people do you pass in the street everyday. The actual vote % was only 3.8% though.
Sure the BNP are getting votes due to protest, but it is still getting votes and things have got worse not better.
And in the Hinkley by Election they came second with 18.8% of the vote.
I think they are gaining momentum and this will probably end up getting more votes for them.
Bit of a bummer having your surname start with an A! Which party is being fascist by banning legal political groups from being in the police or public service?
I am no fan of the BNP but either make it an illegal party or follow the rules otherwise who's next on the McBroon shit list?
To be honest, given the responses accross the Internet I actually feel like joining BNP myself now. Just to say "fuck you" to the people ready to combat facism with, er, facism.
Just remember that when you cheer for people on that list being threatend or loosing their jobs you become no better than the BNP themselves. And I for one do not want to live in a land where I have to toe the line and keep my mouth shut for any fucker. And I will fight you for my freedom.
How is it that publishing a list of personal details regardless of the source should be condoned at all let alone celebrated and passed around like a trophy stag???
People's home addresses, phone numbers, information about their CHILDREN for god's sake, is all being made available online for any to view, and this is supposed to be OK because it's people who joined a particular LEGAL political party?
I often play the Devil's advocate just to stir debate, but on this point I speak true. I find it totally abhorrent that we can vilify a person for belonging to a group. What of UKIP, SNP, Plaid Cymru, Sinn Fein? Hell even (dare I say it) the National Black Police Association.
The term Nationalist gets lumped together with racist far too easily. One problem that continually arises is that very few of us read even a brief synopsis of any parties manifesto, have little to no understanding of their true goals, and use public opinion as fact. I've never voted for this reason alone, my vote would be uneducated and uninformed.
I wonder if we would all be cheering if the personal details of all Reg's members were "Leaked" in some "anti-Hacker-get-your-pound-of-flesh-these-people-are-evil" movement.
... I'll get off my soap-box now...
Look, that's all very well in principle but the BNP is widely known as a violent, racist party, despite it's pretensions. So whlie I'm prepared to support its right to exist and voice its opinions as long as they don't advocate violence, you're damn right I'm going to vilify its members.
Don't muddy this with nationalism - if you're of that persuasion but oppose violence, you can join UKIP. Myself, I think it's safe to assume anyone who not only votes for but actively joins up, has some pretty nasty views.
Where I live, there are 3 bnp councillors on the local council, and one on the borough council. Village life doesnt seem any different to lib/lab/con in previous years.
The problem is most of the local pubs have shut because of the smoking ban, or ....... is that a conspiracy to get us all angry.....
At least the new local sri-lankan shop owner has great offers on wine/beer...and so far his windows are intact
"The term Nationalist gets lumped together with racist far too easily."
Dude, the BNP has "being white" as one of their requisites for entry. Try explaining me how this *isn't* racist! In fact, Nationalist isn't usually lumped together with racist; it is the racists that hide themselves under the Nationalist flag. Remember what NSDAP stands for: "National Socialist German Workers' Party" and we all know it wasn't just about Nationalism, do we?
Agree completely.
This list could of course be completely fabricated, just to make fools of all those who actively searched for it......never mind those who might act on it.
Just because the party has views that might be distasteful, doesn't make it right to publish the data.
There are any number of political parties and organisations, and individuals for that matter, whose views I find odious. But there is no justification for publishing their personal details anywhere.
or the Tibetans, without the casinos or the nice scenery.
The democrats are more racist than the BNP, and I think you will find it hard to join the Democrats unless you are a USA National.
And the USA require people to give up foreign citizenship to have only USA citizenship how racist is that, no dual nationality from the racist merkin system. Plus, only people of ethnic US descent can become president, Arnold Schwarzeneger has run into that racist glass ceiling hasn't he, had to settle for California.
I live in Bangkok at the moment. Here you have no right to buy land, a low change of permenent residency unless you've lived here for many many years and are married to a Thai national and almost zero chance of becoming a full citizen.
People in the UK should wake up and realise that they are one of the few countries who tries to treat all people the same when very much the opposite would and does happen to British people all around the world on a daily basis.
@AC 11:28
Lots of people are rapists too, that doesn't make rape a legitimate enterprise. If everyone were to sit back and say "well they treat people badly, so we might as well too" then there would never be any advancement or improvement in the standards of life.
@AC 00:49
Your comparisons are hilarious in their surreality, if perplexing. You see, the Dalai Lama preaches freedom of cultural expression, peace and harmony. The BNP deliberately seek to cultivate hatred with constantly inaccurate reactionary propaganda, and condone racist violence.
Secondly, you're wrong to state people can't join the Democrats unless they're an American citizen; you can join if you're an alien with permanent residence. That's a legal requirement for giving money to an American political party, and nothing to do with Democrat policy. The comparison does nothing but emphasise the vile racism of the BNP, who actively discriminate on the basis of skin colour.
sounds a little racist to me all this talk of labelling people as aliens, and demanding they have permanent residency, before they can join a particular group, all sounds very socialist and well a bit like the German Socialists of WWII era, the Nazis.
And let's get it right Tibetans are a nation of people, not just the Dalai Lama; some oddly appointed religious head of the nation.
By claiming people are trying to cultivate hatred are you not guilty of the same, I certainly wouldn't want you to hate me Charlie, you sound quite capable of stiring up hatred of minority groups out of thin air.
As to condoning attacks, I think you need go no further than the response by the Labour home secretary to the matter, absolutely shocking, instead of stopping the personal data being leaked she applauded it.
Where is the BNP discriminating on skin colour? I have yet to see anything from them that states they are.
Are you mixing up the BNP with the UK National Front, they are very different groups with very different agendas, from what I can make out.
Though I wouldn't be surprised if you were also mixing them up with Labour.
"That said, you can still legally join them - they're a political party, and we don't tend to ban stuff outright in blighty unless they're actively plotting mass murder."
I think you'll find that there are a quite a few groups who use the UK as a base to actively plot mass murder in full knowledge that they will be neither banned, prosecuted nor deported.
The BNP describe people from overseas as aliens (on their homepage no less) and don't accept donations from foreigners. Now, I wouldn't say either of those things in themselves are racist, but you seem to be damning the very party you're attempting to stand up for.
I don't hate the BNP. I think they're ill-informed, and dangerous, but I don't hate them. Unlike many prominent members of the BNP, I've never been arrested for inciting racial hatred, nor for violent racist assaults.
Their manifesto pledges to positively discriminate in favour of 'native Britons' in the employment market. According to the BNP, only white people can be native Britons.
"And the USA require people to give up foreign citizenship to have only USA citizenship how racist is that, no dual nationality from the racist merkin system."
That's just plain good sense. If you want to become a citizen of another country then you should give up citizenship.
I've got no problem with people who are under the voting age having dual citizenship but once you become an adult able to vote you should make a choice.
