back to article Fight, fight, fight. Gloves are off again between Nutanix and VMware

Yet another playground dust-up between Nutanix and VMware has erupted over a vitriolic sales campaigns, with Nutanix CEO Dheeraj Pandey calling on VMware to stop being a "bully". It all started with Nutanix introducing its You Decide marketing push earlier this month including a You Tube video, poster site ads, and web …

    WTF?

If you're VMWare, why even bother to send a letter to Nutanix? I guess to get that insane response back... ?

It appears 2 companies are using Andy Kaufman style advertising to cast a shadow over all the little players... dirty. That said, if the 2 CEOs settle it with a wrestling match, it's brilliant!

      overunder,

I think you missed the point VMware sent a note to the customers directly, not to Nutanix. VMware appeared to be bullying the customers for being on Nutanix install base list; they also said it would affect their brand and possibly their relationship with Dell and VMW.. "“We don’t want it to affect your brand, as (sic) also your partnership with VMware AND Dell - today or into the future.”

    Memories - 1990s flash back...

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BV89uHp2n9c

Cisco versus Cabletron back in the day. This promo video originally aired at InterOp Atlanta in 1994, causing Cisco to revoke it's licensing of IOS and initiating the downfall of Cabletron systems. This was ripped from a VHS Promo tape, and edited for length (Youtube doesn't allow anything over 10 mins and change...)

    HAHAHA!!!

And Apple declaring at a conference with Adobe's Warnock sitting behind them (joint presentation) that they were close to eliminating/replacing PostScript entirely with their own stuff. Warnock went white. He loved the Macintosh, found Windows execrable, and at huge personal $$opportunitycost had steadfastly refused to port PostScript to Windows. Apple was absolutely dominant in DTP, graphics, etc as a result, and those markets were booming hard.

And then they turned around and stuffed him. He who not only gave them that market, but was maintaining it for them.

Warnock ordered the immediate port to Windows when he got back to the office.

And Apple lost the one market it was making serious headway in vs Microsoft.

[insert 5% marketshare for decade+ about here]

    Pure BS

Nutanix has got the Pure Storage marketing playbook and is acting it out page by page. What next, everybody at Nutanix wearing stupid-colored socks?

      Re: Pure BS

Pure has/had one of the best marketing engines seen in recent years. Marketing and a strong (X EMC ) sales force was the reason they exploded on the market. Proof that not always does the best product win, sometimes its the best sales and marketing force! So what if many of the sales force got named in a lawsuit for non compete; they sold a lot of boxes!

NTNX adding ~1000 new logos a quarter

If NTNX is adding that many new logos it easy to understand the fear from VMware and the rest of the three-tier dinosaurs. I don't think anyone expected this growth but their quest to make infrastructure is invisible is clearly catching on with their very visible marketing campaign.

hahahaha, Can't wait to see Sanjay Poonen throw his toys out the cot again, when AWS suck all the "VMware on AWS" VMs to EC2 ;-)

    VMware needs to be worried

VMware should be worried, but WTF! Intimidating your customers, some of whom spend millions per year with you is not good business practice.

    VMware have major issues...

VXRAIL, VMware's HCI - No one is buying it. I never even really hear it mentioned. HP and Dell are being replaced extremely quickly and very agressively. They (Nutanix) are selling so many nodes they can't keep up with demand.

Dell (servers) and HP should be sh*tting themselves as all the big customers are going HCI and it isnt being replaced with Simplivity or Similar. Nutanix is the king of the hill and the number one choice (No I am not an employee or shareholder, just a customer)

As for VMware Hypervisor v AHV.... Well, VMware are entrentched in big environments, especially when millions of dollars and tens of thousands of hours have been spent setting up the products.

However, new and upcoming deployments and companies, there is a real choice to be had.
