"In February, the directors of the NSA, CIA, FBI, National Intelligence, Defense Intelligence Agency and National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency testified to the US Senate that they worried about Huawei and ZTE being part of China's intelligence-gathering apparatus."

What about the NSA, CIA, FBI, National Intelligence, Defense Intelligence Agency and National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency and their intelligence-gathering apparatus (on it's own people}?.

All the evidence is proving otherwise, sanmigueelbeer. And that is offering more than just hope to a whole host of others capable of leading whatever they have a notion to control in any number of alternate directions with a highly disruptive command.

And it makes for an exciting future which forces fake news media outlets to dig ever deeper holes for themselves as they deny there be anything more truthful to share and/or would try to prevent presentation of evidence proving the matter.

    Byo - Build you own

If Australia did that they wouldn't have any mobile apparatus to use !

Most major ISP's dole out Huawei dongles for Hotspots or Mobile broadband ethernet.

But then mobile phones are just hacks in a convenient handheld carry around device.

I could understand suspicions about Cisco Meraki or HP Aruba, why worry any more about Huawei and ZTE?

    If one can't compete,

one can always ban one's competitors. And there can hardly be a better pretext than appealing to «national security»....

Huawei is a tramp in the industry. They have stolen technology from every vendor they ever partnered with... LSI, Cisco, T-Mobile, Motorola, British Telecomm... I toured Huawei's facility when I worked at Hitachi. They did their best to try to coax inside information out of us during meetings. If they have great phones, bring them in, sell them, but secure them. Wait... we can't secure the ones we already have... so it hardly makes a difference now does it?
