back to article All flasher Tintri makes play for the cash-strapped: Buy 'em drive by drive

Tintri has made a FlexDrive facility available so cash-strapped customers can expand all-flash array capacity one drive at a time. Customers don't have add drives at multi-drive canister level or in RAID groups, it said. This means capacity can track demand more closely and spread out OPEX cash needs across smaller payments - …

    20/20

Amused they they would call thier tech conf "Tintri Tech 20/20"

20/20 vision being the average persons vision, not high visual acuity. An average product for the middle of the market at best. Pity they price themselves like they are a premium storage vendor.

Tintri may be claiming 20/20 which as you say is average but is there a reason why you are double posting? posting twice doesn't make your points more valid.

Good for customers with existing units, but would you buy a box as a new customer?

Based on Chris Mellor's article last week, I'd suggest "no".

Why bet your business on a vendor that most people are suggesting will either go "pop" or get bought by someone?

Going bust is bad for existing customers, but being bought isn't necessarily a nirvana for them either (ask customers who have/had Sun, Whiptail, DSSD, etc, etc)......

Tintri won't be around in a few months. They are losing people initially out of choice (read necessity) but now because morale is on its' arse. Even if they get bought it will be for a song and by someone picking up a few bargain patents rather than serious about storage!

Perhaps Cisco will buy them? They have quite a track record with storage...

So a company that just had a disappointing earnings announcement, and is considering reducing their burn rate and exploring strategic options, just introduced a way for customers to buy LESS of their product by purchasing just one drive at a time?

    Brilliant.

thats a decent movement. a lot of vendors have some flexible consumption model plan. but by the drive??? buying a single disk drive for an array?

man...if they have to go to those lengths to help their customers consume their product - thats scary to me.

i could see entire trays of disk yes. but a SINGLE drive?
