    Productivity Puzzle

According to this article in the NewYorker productivity is falling

No mention of IT in the article, but in fact IT is responsible.

Instead of a few meeting notes we have endless powerpoint slides

Instead of a sketch on paper we have endless Visio redrafts

Instead of a quick business letter we have endless reformatting

Instead of conversations we have endless email chains

    All wastes time

Well, IT helps us to solve the problems we would'n have without it. But there are policies that tweak performance.

It's not a puzzle at all.

      It's bloat, pure and simple.

Consider that I can create and print a document using Wordstar or create and print a spreadsheet using Visicalc (both running on DOS 3.3) MUCH faster than I can perform the exact same task(s) using anything that Redmond is currently pushing.

    Essential (procrastination) tools

Why knuckle down to drafting that hideously tedious and meticulous strategic policy document regarding the intricacies of the proposed inter-organisational departmental restructuring arising from the forthcoming merger, when you could comparatively pleasantly while the afternoon away jousting with Office's auto-bulleting?
