back to article Microsoft Flash FLIP-FLOP: it's now IE10 default for Win8, WinRT

Microsoft has had an apparent change of heart with regard to Adobe Flash content on Windows 8 and Windows RT: it has announced that it will now allow most Flash content to run by default in Internet Explorer 10 on both operating systems. "We believe having more sites 'just work' in IE10 improves the experience for consumers, …

    will see more of this

As much as Adobe and everyone else wants to pretend like Flash never existed and that everyone should have switched already, as long as a big portion of the pr0n web sites use flash people will install the plugin or use browsers that support. Adobe choosing to support it less and less is at some point going to cause a giant M$ blaster worm size cockup because their user base is going down much slower than they seem to believe.

We're all supposedly grown up on here, you can say porn if you like. Or is this some new kind of numeric porn I'm not aware of?

    Security first?

    >"These days, however, Adobe has synchronized its own Flash patching schedule with Microsoft's Patch Tuesdays, and the two companies are working closely to manage Flash security on the Windows platform – which could help to explain Redmond's decision to ease its restrictions on Flash content."

Good to see that these two companies are finally taking security somewhat seriously.

Still more significant, perhaps, is that Microsoft has been the only vendor to block Flash content from its browser without giving users a way to opt out of the blacklist.

I think I can remember at least one vendor that has banned Flash content for good and stuck to it. What was the name again? Hmm, probably some insignificant company not worth mentioning from some backwater place like, say, Cupertino...

      Perhaps, but for different reasons.

In Microsoft's case, it probably because they had to concede defeat that flash is still more popular than Silverlight.

This is an important factor when you want your visited web sites to "just work".

So it's ok to say things are different even if they are the same but the reasons for them are different? Flash is banned on iOS devices, to make out that that's not relevant because of Silverlight is nonsense.

"they had to concede defeat that flash is still more popular than Silverlight"

Silverlight is completely blocked in IE10 on Windows 8, 'immersive' (TIFKAM), and in both environments on Windows RT. Not even Microsoft websites are allowed to use Silverlight. So that argument really doesn't fly. The IE team's blog post's comments are full of people complaining about Silverlight not being available.

The reason for supporting Flash is exactly as stated: because many websites simply do not work without it. The trend is to provide an "HTML5" website for iOS, that usually doesn't work on anything else, but particularly not on IE 9 or 10.

You mean that advertising company that owns the video website where most of the content is still served as Flash, even when you have specifically opted into the HTML5 trial?

I really don't get the hate for Flash at all. When used right, it's bloody fantastic.

When used wrong (or when you could achieve the same results without using it), yes it is awful and horrible.

So shouldn't all you flash haters be calling for the banning of every other language/ development engine because if it's used badly it's horrible... so therefore let's make it extinct. We would have nothing left....
