    ooh - i'm soo happy...

At last, a really worthwhile activity for a Friday ... with added confirmation that El Reg staff have good [sci-fi] taste!

the toughest call was definitely between Bladerunner and Dark Star, but Bladerunner edged it. Most importantly though, I must have used up a good 10 minutes chortling over the sheer cheekiness of script writers over the decades. Absolutely beat hands down watching emails dropping into my In Box (and doing nothing about them).

    Nice one guys :-)

    Spectacular

I think we need a gold star icon, because this is the best article ever[1].

    What about:

"You're hit man. I ain't got time to bleed. Oh ok then, *ptang* *ptang* have you got time to duck? *BOOM*" (Predator)

"There's a lot of slack jawed faggots round here. This stuff'll make you a sexual tyrannosaurus.. just like me" (Predator)

I tip my cap to the film industry in some part, after all, when they get it right, with some of the films quoted in the above list, they certainly get it *right*.

[1] It must be friday if I'm making outrageous claims like that.

  49. Ivan Lozowy

    That damn Dutch accent!

I always thought it was "shores of Orion," though "shouler" makes sense -- Orion the hunter and all that. Nice to see I chose the number 1 pick, though I thought I was being idiosyncratic.

    Babylon 5 sadly missing

"Only those whose lives are brief can imagine that love is eternal. You should embrace that remarkable illusion. It may be the greatest gift your race has ever received." - Lorien

Ivanova is always right. I will listen to Ivanova. I will not ignore Ivanova's recommendations. Ivanova is god. And if this ever happens again, Ivanova will personally rip your lungs out." - Ivanova

"Understanding is a three-edged sword: your side, their side, and the truth." - Kosh Naranek

  51. Tim B

    Hard to choose

Sooo many to choose from. I was dithering between the ones that are currently top of the list and in the end it just had to be blade runner...

There are some films on the list and in the comments I haven't seen. I'm gonna need to do something about that I think.

  52. Mike Brown

ok qoutes from blade runner but...

what about: "The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long - and you have burned so very, very brightly, Roy."

or from star trek generations: "live is the fire in which we burn"

or the best line in star trek history, from 5: Kirk: "excuse me....excuse me......What does God need with a starship?"

  53. Torben Mogensen

Well, that's funny, because I voted for that 30 minutes after you and there were still only 2 votes for it - so there's either some crazy flux-capacitor related shenanigans going on or someone's fiddling the figures (or you could work with me, in which case we shall be having words about 'conan'...) ...

It could also potentially be due to the overwhelming number of votes cast for this quote and the system just can't handle it. I for one know that I'll be voting again from home after work and I'll also be dusting off the old DMC-12 for a bit of vote rigging. In fact, I should have already done that, so why the hell are there still only 2 votes?????

Shame to see that doing so well when the bit about all the components being made by the lowest bidder is more usually attributed to John Glenn. I swear the delivery of the "Time to die" monologue was the making of Rutger Hauers career. Only time I ever felt sad at seeing the "bad guy" die. He completely stole that movie from under Harrison Fords nose.

Then, IMHO, he never delivered on his promise in later movies. Yeah, Blind Fury was a hoot but none of his later parts had the intensity and "punch" of Roy.

    Alan.

  77. Spleen

look at me, I read the article

Went for "I know kung fu". Because I think it's a great moment of transition - the bit when Mr Anderson the loser office jockey becomes Neo the bullet-dodging ass-kicker.

Personally I think Equilbirum should have had at least one entry:

    "No. Not without incident."

"Without love, without anger, without sorrow, breath is a just a clock - ticking."

"Wait, Wait, look at me, look at me, I'm life, I live I, I breathe, I feel, now that you know it can you really take it? Is it really worth the price?" "I pay it gladly."

And my own preferred quote from the original Metropolis would be (paraphrased from memory, but it's a translation anyway):

There were four or five Babylon 5 TV movies.

"In The Beginning" was easily the best and filled in a lot of valuable back-story.

Two speeches stand out; Londo's "They were magnificent" speech and The President's "Hold the line against the night" speech both make my hair stand on end. Not very quotable, though.

    Event Horizon

In general I wasn't a fan of Event Horizon. Sam Neill does not a crazed satanic avatar make. But he had one good quote; imagine a deranged, satanic Sam Neill - having just plucked out his eyes - turning to our heroes, smiling broadly, and saying "Eyes? Where we're going, we won't need eyes to see".

Also reminds me of the one good line from Sphere - the one good moment - where a clearly deranged and potentially very dangerous Samuel L Jackson says to Dustin Hoffman "you aren't scared of dying, are you?" with a big smile on his face. It works in the film.

  91. David Evans

    I chose Blade Runner...

...because its all profound (and not a little nerdy), but my real favourite is:

Howard Marner: "What if it goes out and melts down a bus load of nuns? How would you like to write the headline on that one?"

    Benjamin Jabituya: "Nun soup?"

Short Circuit. Shit film but full of great quotes/

  92. Alan W. Rateliff, II
    Paris Hilton

"On the other side of the screen..."

"...it all looks so easy." Kevin Flynn - Tron

Or Mathilda May in "Lifeforce": "Use my body." Ohhhhhh, yes.

    Paris, "Use My Body".

  93. Dave Bullock

Yeah, I'm calm. I'm a calm person. Is there some reason I shouldn't be calm?

"I also like: "What the hell are we supposed to use man, harsh language?", but I don't think that was Hudson"

You'd be right, that was Frost, shortly before being introduced to the business end of a flamethrower.

Personally I think this is sorely missing some quotes from the Abyss:

Virgil: God, I hate that bitch.

Hippy: Probably shouldn't have married her then, huh?

Dr. Weir: [stammering] Well, that's - that's difficult to - it's all math...

    Miller: Try us, Doctor.

Dr. Weir: Right. Well, um, using layman's terms... Use a retaining magnetic field to focus a narrow beam of gravitons - these, in turn, fold space-time consistent with Weyl tensor dynamics until the space-time curvature becomes infinitely large, and you produce a singularity. Actually, just to be a pedant, that quote is usually attributed to Alan Shepard, sitting atop Freedom 7 shortly before becoming the first American in space.

When reporters asked Shepard what he thought about as he sat atop the Redstone rocket, waiting for liftoff, he had replied, 'The fact that every part of this ship was built by the low bidder.'"

Shepard is also responsible for what's now known as Shepard's Prayer: "Please, dear God, don't let me fuck up."

"Liberate tu-tamek Ex Inferis" (mental note: do NOT go to the ship transmitting that message!)

I suddenly realized that most of those 42 lines are familiar with me, excepto for some old movies like Forbidden Planet, Flash Gordon and The Day the Earth Stood Still. Most of the rest I have seen... and theoretically, H2G2 could have entered the poll, but as some other people mentioned, the movie wasn't exactly great. (Though it wasn't that bad, either...)

    Star Wars

There are so many memorable lines from Star Wars, but this has always been one of my favorites.

Moff Tarkin in a moment of sadly misplaced bravado : "Evacuate? In our moment of triumph? I think you overestimate their chances."

Surely one of the most iconic lines has to be an unspoken one, Darth Vader, breathing in and then out. Just once is all it takes, but that has to be one of the best 'lines'.

Then when Han Solo is hanging upside down from a hover ship, being held by Chewy. He's just recovering from carbonite hibernation and is blind, and he's trying to shoot a tentacle that is pulling Lando towards certain snack food status. Lando has a line that goes something like "I thought you were blind!" IIRC Han says "trust me".

I always liked Tim Russ's one line from Spaceballs too. He's one of the henchmen literally combing the desert (with giant combs) for our intrepid heroes. He's asked if he's found anything yet. The answer? "We ain't found shit!" Pity is this is one of the funniest moments and is one of the ones *always* cut when they show the flick on TV.

Paris, because well...you know...the fact there there are close encounters of the third kind sort of implies that there may also be close encounters of the first and second kind, and that can't be a bad thing, can it?

Or maybe it should be a soliloquy..

(can't be bothered to find a movie script, so I'll just copy & paste from the book):

"No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinised and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinise the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. With infinite complacency men went to and fro over this globe about their little affairs, serene in their assurance of their empire over matter. It is possible that the infusoria under the microscope do the same. [...] Yet across the gulf of space, minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us. "

Like someone said, I saw the title and thought

    Of bladerunner and Roy batty.

Though I thought it was "sea beams" as that made more sense than C beams. It added the whole concept of an earth empire in space, most people fleeing the world to better places while the replicants waged the wars on the frontier.

Added credibility to the chinese bint in her blimp advertising off world colonies and the film gets another huge step in explaining the plot and the background.

And to know he made it up is even better.

Wow, so few comments on 2001...

but it got a lot of votes anyway!

I tied between Bladerunner (cause I re-watched it two days ago) and 2001, just because they are both so classic. 2001 just seemed to have more menace, more atmosphere, because of what it portended. But Batty's monologue was a better acted part, so it depends upon if you want to applaud the director or the actor. Given their careers, Kubrick has to beat Hauer as the tie-breaker.

But Rockhound's quote is far funnier, and a few Ripley and Hudson quotes get used far more often!
