back to article Bundled music newbie Boinc aims for year-end launch

The disaster that was Nokia's Comes With Music hasn't deterred entrepreneurs from having another go at bundling music access with hardware. Beyond Oblivion has raised a huge amount of cash to do much the same thing – and told the FT it will launch by the year end. The service will be called Boinc, continuing the tradition of …

    Stop

    There is already a BOINC

Released in 2002, currently on ~500k PCs around the globe, in various news articles for last 7 years...

I'd say that's a very good prior claim to the name. And this bunch of ne'er-do-wells must know that, so bollocks to them for trying to steal it from such a noble cause.

      Its worse than that

There are an awful lot of sites out there talking about the distributed numbercrunching BOINC, and they rank very highly in search engine indexes. Musicboinc simply won't appear on anyone's radar.

Surely this is entry-level marketing knowledge nowadays. They're fortunate that the name is shared by a respectable academic project rather than, say, some sort of awful web 2.0 porn or dating site.

        no, they should suffer...

if a company cannot be bothered to check if their "new" name is in use then they should be required to share it with a porn site. Fools.

    Hmm

They should have kept back couple of grand and hired a web developer. The form for Beta sign-up is a truly hideous piece of work - the comments in the markup eg 'Not working as I was hoping' are quite amusing also.

I would have signed up for the Beta nonetheless..... but sadly I just get the error message 'something went wrong' after submission.

      Ditto

See above - same error message, and why do they want to know facebook, twitter and website details? Do yo only get on the Beta if you have enough friends?

    They must be really stupid

to name it after something that already exists for 10 years and used by millions of people.

Can't someone show them how to use Google before choosing a name?

Cynically, perhaps it was an intentional method to gain publicity by causing an outcry...

    WTF?

    BO

Just asked them in one of their blogs if they are the same BOINC as thBerkley BOINC we await their response!

    +1 to all the above

Always check the name isn't already taken, or at least doesn't have such a high profile you can't bully them into handing it over ^^

The logo is also very reminiscent of the favicon Microsoft uses for Bing.

I really don't think they last.

      They can't last.

As the only currency they seem to have on the "explanation" site is the $, and that's fuc*king buggered, they're dead in the water already
