I agree, I was wishing the .xxx domain was mandatory and all other domains would lose their sites.
To resolve conflicting names, just add a .xxx on the end so porn.com and porn.net would be porncom.xxx and pornnet.xxx
Filtering would be so much simpler, but that's a double edge sword, right?
why this was such a big issue.
Blocking porn would be so much easier. Then when you fancied some unblock the domain. If you haven't the access you shouldn't be looking at porn on your work PC
Business would have a easier time too
Why is the so much résistance to this idea or is it just moving too much towards a multiple tier internet?
Or is it because the porn industry wouldn't comply because it would make it so easy to block it?

While godaddy might be the largest in regards to domain registrations they also do alot of undercutting of their competition by selling below cost.
I'll never understand why anyone in the adult industry is upset with another tld. A rational person could never explain to me why .xxx is a bad idea. It would make adult filtering for networks children will access easy as pie.
I guess that in lays the problem. The sickos we have in this would want children to have access to pornography.

It also makes filtering for adults as easy as pie. Not every country has such an "enlightened" outlook on filtering as your country may have. And there's no guarantee as to whether or not things will stay like that in the future.
I'd wager that there are rather more sickos in this world who would like to treat us all like children than there are of your claimed sickos who want children to have access to pornography.
.xxx is a bad idea for the adult industry because if they were forced to use it, any and all ISPs could instantly block all porn sites from their customers. They are upset with it for precisely the same reason Jews and homosexuals were upset when the Nazis forced them to wear yellow stars and pink triangles.

New around here, are you? It has been explained countless times in these forums that there is not a clear-cut and universally accepted definition of porn and therefore we'll never see "all the porn" conveniently housed under .xxx, leaving the rest of the web porn-free.
Obviously the converse probably *is* true. That is, I can't think of any good reason not to block .xxx on my own machines. That's one reason why the porn industry is mostly going to ignore it.
I cant see any positive reason for anyone to want a xxx domain.
There are only two practical reasons why there are different TLDs
1. to resolve naming conflicts and allow different people to have the same domain which increasingly is a moot point considering the number of companies that succeed in laying claim to a domain name across all TLDs.
2 to permit a company to different geographically targeted sites.
As .xxx is a non geographic TLD and also potentially pron to censorship. Porn site operators arnt going to drop their .com domains and most of the registrations of xxx domains will be merely to secure their name accross both TLDs.
While likely some countries will no doubt try and block the xxx TLD there is also a risk even to those registered on xxx merely to secure the name used on their .com site censorious bodies may use the xxx TLD as a 'confessions list and block at IP level
At 7 times more and the risks associated with it I would just let it wither

There's no "try" or "risk" about it. Several countries have already said they will block it and India has announced that they will use it as a "confessions" list. (http://blogs.forbes.com/michaelhumphrey/2011/03/24/indias-reaction-to-xxx-domain-exhibits-why-porn-industry-hates-it/) Even in the liberal west, there may be legal risks if employers don't block it and ISPs will certainly offer blocking to home users. It probably already IS the most heavily censored domain ever and it isn't "live" yet.
The only real question is how long the domain will last. The registrars will make a killing this year, but it will soon be clear that no-one is *using* their .xxx domains and so I don't expect many "brand owners" to renew in 2012. 2013 may not see enough renewals to cover costs. Do ICANN have a plan for keeping a TLD alive after its "parent" registrar goes bankrupt?
