back to article KDE turns 30 with Plasma 6.8, but the X11 session isn't invited

KDE Plasma 6.8 is nearly here, bringing the revived Oxygen theme and dropping its X11 session. For those who prefer an older look, a new project called Klassik recreates the KDE 3 experience using modern Plasma technology. KDE has released the second and final beta of Plasma 6.8, while developers have already begun landing …

X11 applications will continue to work through XWayland.

I'm curious to find out how Kicad works with XWayland, given the dire warnings here: https://www.kicad.org/blog/2025/06/KiCad-and-Wayland-Support/

As it happens, I have a spare laptop with nothing to do (it's sound is broken but I don't think that's an issue for Kicad) so I may play and find out.

Would be cool if you could report on that....

Yeah, lots of applications will just not work, and apparently screen reader functionality is severely limited. It is not completely ready! So we are stuck with banana software (ripens at the customer's).

I have been told by a reader that window rolling (the ability to roll up a window into its titlebar, like a window roller-blind) does not work on Wayland, although in 6.7.$latest it works fine on X11.

But I did not verify this for myself, so I did not include it.

I had my first run-in with Wayland yesterday...

    ...and I was not happy.

Up to this point I've been fine with it. It's done everything I needed it to and wasn't much of a problem. Which I imagine is how it is for most people. Yesterday I tried plugging in an old 1600x1200 VGA monitor. No edid. No edid means no resolutions. Can I just xrandr it and have my resolution back? No. You need a special utility to generate files that you're then required to update your bootloader to pass to the kernel...

    Um. What?

    To set a custom resolution?

    WHY?

This is not a sensible design decision.

Isn't this a DRM issue, not Wayland? (i.e. it would affect X11 on your system too).

I think that the issue the poster is stressing is that with X11, you can just execute xrandr, set a supported resolution and that's it. You can, probably (can't remember), do it also by setting a corresponding section on xorg.conf.

While on wayland you have to make the same thing with boot time overrides. Indeed the issue is derived from wayland's DRM requirement (i.e. no drm driver == no wayland, which isn't true for x11).

          Thanks for educating me. :)

Ahh... yes... the "Hide under the desk as you type 'startx' section...", I remember it well. :-D

            Yes, great description!

the install guides at the time were full of "double check the horizontal and vertical sync rates, incorrect values may terminate/explode your monitor". Fun times, very glad we moved on.

I had an issue with a particular monitor. It was connected via DVI. Thing is, it was nothing to do with the monitor or Wayland. I was using the wrong DVI cable. It needed to be a DVI dual (all pins populated) . That solved the resolution problem and was correctly detected.

Reports of KDE3's demise are a bit premature.

KDE3 is still an optional installable package on openSUSE.

    Pointles

While I understand somebody that has an itch and wants to fork something, I honestly think there are too many people wasting their time on these sort of things, but each to their own.

KDE you are now dead to me

    No X11, no use.

      None. None at all.

Fortunately, XFCE still allows you your choice of X or other.

Slackware ships with a good base to build your own variation of XFCE on ... don't let that scare you, it'll work just fine out of the box, too.

RIP, KDE. The gawd/ess-awful GNOME has won. Sad, that.
