SI
More sub intelligence than super intelligence.
Also: what is the SI unit for intelligence anyway?
US president Donald Trump has decided the term “artificial intelligence” must be abandoned, in favour of his preferred term “superintelligence.” “The word ‘artificial’ makes intelligence fake, it makes it sound fake,” Trump told the United Nations general assembly on Tuesday. “From this point forward, all United States documents …
I was going to suggest going the other direction, making the Trump be the SI unit for intelligence, on the grounds we can more easily get him to refer to the megaTrump when speaking of superintelligence (or the gigaTrump, otherwise known as one Clippy's* worth of superduperintelligence).
* "You appear to be speaking to World leaders; would you like some help with that?" Sadly, we've taught everyone to tell Clippy to bog off, but there are some who really should have clicked "yes"...
A slight diversion, but there's surely a market gap for a game of playing or trading cards that features Donnie, his revolting relatives, his revolting associates, and his revolting appointees. Each card has scores for Stupidity, Dishonesty, Ugliness, Greed, Ineptitude.
I'd call it Top Trumps, but the name has already been taken. So Bottom Trumps it has to be.
Like a badger,
You forgot the category for bizarre sexual habits. There's one who really likes dogs, another who loves sofas - not sure how those two can interact without one of them being hit on the nose with a rolled-up newspaper and told to get on the floor. Not to mention Trump himself...
Trump: Manuel
Manuel: SI
Trump: he's from Barcelona[Anthropic**]
Melania: It'd be quicker to train a monkey
Melania: Donald!
Don't mention the Tan[the war with Iran]
*Manuel - Trump's super intelligent personal assistant. Not to be confused with his personal executive assistant and fellow catering truck passenger
**other "SI" companies are available
I thought it had already been tacitly agreed a "Trump" referred to Nº 2s for obvious reasons and because it serendipitously rhymes with "dump."
I suppose given the creature is a complete cloaca it could be applied to both.
Man washing his hands: "That wasn't the Last Trump, but it was a right Donald John all the same."
Opinion ?
To quote Macron: "I don't think, I know."
I could easily imagine that a cockroach stranded on its back frantically struggling would appear super·intelligent to the current US administration and its supporters.
Artificial = fake ?
The ultimate Latin derivation of artificial is from ars and facere meaning "work of art; practical skill; a business, craft" and "to make or to do" respectively. Fake doesn't seem to have made an appearance.
The man not content with being a delusional orange gobshiting shitgibbon must be a brainless delusional orange gobshiting shitgibbon.
If he had proposed Mendacious Intelligence would be on the money with his being an master of mendacity and of venility.
Artificial = fake ?
Words change their meaning. St Paul's cathedral was described as "Awful and Artificial" - meaning its artifice filled you with awe
I propose stuff that is obviously full of shit now be described as "American"
That midnight kebab was American. That movie was really American. And of course American intelligence
At least it will give the Dutch a break in English idiom
*** I propose stuff that is obviously full of shit now be described as "American"
Counterproposal: Not all Americans (I prefer the term USians) are full of shit. Therefore, I would suggest "Trumpian".
(Disclaimer: I myself am USian... while I try to not be full of shit I am more than capable of it.)
But the majority supported him
And even the official 'nice guy' front runner for the official 'nice guys' party says he'll keep tariffs on Canada
So I'm prepared to consider all Americans the same way my grandfather considered all Germans when he was visiting the Ruhr
**** But the majority supported him
Nope... if one does the math only 32% of eligible voters cast their ballot for the Orange God Emperor. If you don't count those who couldn't be bothered to vote he still never had a majority. His closest instance was 2024, where he only received a plurality (AKA the most votes) at 49.8%. In no election did he break over 50%.
**** And even the official 'nice guy' front runner for the official 'nice guys' party says he'll keep tariffs on Canada
Who exactly are you referring to? I suspect it's not as simple as just dropping the tariffs.
**** So I'm prepared to consider all Americans the same way my grandfather considered all Germans when he was visiting the Ruhr
I do understand, but please don't paint all of us with the same brush. I myself didn't ask for any of this nonsense; I actively voted against it. I'm just unwillingly along for the ride.
Artificial Intelligence is still not a human being thinking and hopefully using wisdom and experience to solve a problem. Also having the moral judgement to know the difference between something is right or wrong or in between. Super Intelligence also makes the machine in many ways superior to people. Machines are not infallible. Computers and AI are only as smart as the information programmed into them. With Trump and his way of thinking fed into Super Intelligence basically means "Garbage in, Garbage Out."
The great irony being that if AI considers the evidence of how successful governments are run, and are not allowed to include raw emotion and prejudice in their considerations, then let almost universally come out in the libertarian left of the political compass.
In other words, these “super intelligences” would never vote Trump.
He really does remind me Adam Susan from the V for Vendetta graphic novels (the movie went for Sutler to make a more overt link to Hitler)
I wonder if he is in love with an AI like Adam Susan was, I do get the strong sense he shares the same views about "black boys doing dirty filthy things together"
Wonder if the ai in question will be called "fate"?
Apparently someone in his circle is feeding him ideas from dystopias.....
Already formed American Newspeak, Amsoc (well US Stalinism), turned the republican party into Norse fire (waiting for Strength/Peace through unity, unity through faith and America Prevails, disappointed he hasn't gone down the Hugo Chavez hours long nightly diatribes......yet....?)
All joking aside, even his inner circle now is basically trying to 'manage' his behavior. As unhinged as his behavior is, they basically try to keep him from behaving even MORE unhinged. Some assume it's his old age catching up on him, but frankly I think it's just his no longer giving a care what he does since people in the US are limited to 2 goes as President. (I give 50/50 odds he tries to not leave office when his term is done.)
Come on, El Reg, the country is called Turkey in the English language.
Otherwise, for consistency's sake, you should refer to Deutschland rather than Germany, Espa~na (don't know how to type that :-() rather than Spain, and so on. As for how Kazakhstan is written in its own language, I haven't a clue.
Why not just stick to English?
n̈ isn't a unicode character - it's n combined with diaeresis U+0308.
There are no Linux alt keys - there are Xorg xcompose keys (which should work just as well on GNU/Hurd).
You can type the freestanding diaeresis (U+00A8) with «compose» " " ; ¨
Although that isn't very useful, as you get; n¨
I wasn't able to add n̈, as XKB doesn't seem to support outputting 2 characters with one multi key.
I did add a combining diaeresis to a custom Xcompose configuration (yes, there is a UTF-8 character between those "")
`#place in .config/X11/Xcompose
include "%L"
«Multi_key> «colon> «colon> : "̈" U0308 # COMBINDING DIAERESIS - allows typing n̈
`
(change « with <, as it compains that the post contains invalid HTML).
When you type `n «compose» : :`, you get; n̈
Although, such Xcompose needs to be loaded by something, such as ibus.
Linux doesn't handle entering UTF-8 - that's up to a IME in a DE supporting that function (it's broken in ibus for whatever reason).
Xorg already supports the superior compose key anyway - no need to remember UTF-8 codes, you type; «compose» n ~ to get; ñ
Or in the church of Emacs; C-x 8 «ret» LATIN SMALL LETTER N WITH TILDE (which is a bit verbose).
⋄¿♯¡≈≠≮≯
You're confusing Linux (i.e. the Linux console which is part of the kernel) and the complex software based on X-Windows or Wayland. What you wrote applies to the latter only.
A typical Linux keyboard layout _does_ support entering Unicode code points. You hold down the <AltGr> key, and type in the hex code point on the numeric keypad (where a to f are <NumLock> to <Enter>). For most code points this won't do you much good since, apart from on my system, the console can only display 256 or 512 distinct glyphs. On releasing <AltGr> the character (or U+fffd, the replacement character) appears on the screen.
There's also holding down <Alt> and typing in a code point in decimal on the numeric keypad. This only works for characters up to 255.
Composing characters is all very well, but is restricted. If you want to type, say, a rainy umbrella (U+2614 ☔) or the radioactive sign (U+2622 ☢) you need to know the code points (not UTF-8) to enter them. The umbrella and the rain don't exist as separate code points, so they can't be composed. ;-)
While Linux optionally has the "fbcon" *terminal emulator*, it's a really bad terminal emulator and it's also totally useless without at least a shell to run (for example, GNU bash).
Linux is also meant to dump kernel panics to fbcon, but it's not like that function actually works in practice.
I wasn't aware of the AltGr hex value insertions functionality in fbcon, but as fbcon doesn't support UTF-8 (only some proprietary variant of extended ASCII), the functionality is almost totally useless (but at least I've now found a way to enter a if the 'a' key is broken thanks).
So yes, I wasn't confused, Linux doesn't handle entering UTF-8, although if you have a shell, it turns out you can hand type in hex code points and Linux will provide them to the shell and you can mungle the characters blind to get a UTF-8 character without being able to see it (or you can more easily launch the church of Emacs and do C-x 8 RET UMBRELLA WITH RAIN DROPS C-x 8 RET RADIOACTIVE SIGN - while you still can't see it, that'll be far more reliable).
Meanwhile, Xcompose can compose such UTF-8 characters;
<Multi_key> <r> <u> : "☔" U2614 # EMOJI RAINY UMBRELLA
<Multi_key> <n> <r> : "☢" U2622 # RADIOACTIVE SIGN
fbcon is a high quality piece of software. I've been using it as my main working environment for over 25 years. Unlike so much other software, it's functionality is unchanging and dependable. The format of the keyboard layout file is unchanged since the late 1990s; likewise for the font files.
Any terminal is useless without a shell running in it, so I don't see why you've singled out the Linux console here.
Terminals don't support UTF-8, except for input from the keyboard. They support 32-bit Unicode, sometimes called UTF-32. The Linux console does support Unicode, but is limited to 256 or 512 distinct glyphs from the Basic Multilingual Plane, all of which must be half-width (i.e. no East Asian characters, etc.) As I've said, I have enhanced the Linux Console to handle any number of distinct glyphs, also full-width ones, but the kernel team weren't interested in my patch when I submitted it. They just want this console software to die, despite the number of users it has.
I'm not sure how useful Xcompose would be on X used as you propose. If you wanted to type lots of rainy umbrellas (which might be useful in Scotland ;-), it would be worthwhile setting up your keyboard as you say. If you want to type a wide variety of different Unicode code points, having to make an entry for each one before typing it would just slow you down and likely cause confusion.
In 2022 the country applied to the UN and other bodies for the nation to be referred to as Türkiye in the English language.
You can call it what you like, people will still know where you're referring to, but the request was approved & official records updated.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Name_of_Turkey
Neither the UN nor any other body has any authority over the English language. This contrasts with languages like French and German which do have such bodies.
Türkiye is not an English name. It can't be typed on an English layout keyboard, and likely can't even be said by an English speaker.
In general, the names of countries and large cities get translated when translating languages. And even when they don't, they're often pronounced differently (?wrongly) in non-native languages. Examples of the latter are Berlin, Koblenz and Hannover in English.
If you're right about Turkey requesting an awkward spelling for its name in English, then that was brass-necked audacity. Shame on those officials who permitted this anomaly and the resulting confusion and difficulties.
If your keyboard is limited to Trumpian characters (not sure what was the name before he renamed that character set to America SCII), you have only yourself to blame.
But you are likely leaving in a second-zone country where maps show Gulf of America, Lake America, New America and the like...
Huh I did not know that. I wouldn't have argued 'It's Turkey in English' like Alan, but priobably would have gone calling it Turkey they few times I'd ever nention it in writing. (To be honest I'll probably have to settle for Turkiye in my writing since I don't have a ü on my keyboard, I cut and pasted the one I used in this sentence. I mean for informal writing, If I was doing something formal I'd pop up a keyboard with the umlauted letters, german esset, etc. I miss Wordperfect where I could have just hit a compose key. "u to get ü)
I'm still calling it Turkey (because I'm not Turkish), I'm using Ivory Coast, not the French equivalent, because I'm not French, 'Snowdonia' because I'm English, not Welsh, and AI, AI (as well as other, ruder names). As a philatelist, I still use the colonial era names for Indian cities (Bombay etc) as they appear on the postmarks for the era that specialists generally collect, and I'll keep calling Trump a piece of shit.
Amusingly the TV announced a drama the other night with a stern warning for young snowflakes, advising them that it 'used outdated language'. It was an episode of 'Miss Marple', which is generally set in the 1940s and 1950s. What sort of language would viewers have expected?
I flew from Gloucester all across Wales to Haverford West airport once. On the way over the south Wales valleys air traffic control asked for a position report, you normally give the nearest town or landmark within 5 miles. Although I knew exactly where I was, I looked at the map (before GPS) and realised I couldn't pronounce the nearest town, or the next, or the one after that. So I was forced to reply "30 miles west of Cardiff, Golf Mike Tango".
They shouldn't be allowed to rename Snowdonia and the Breacon Beacons on the ground of aviation safety.
is attention. just ignore him. Major media is turning their backs , the man's gone the deep end and digging. All he craves is attention. No matter how outrageous , all he wants is his name on front pages. Stop , ignore him. Pretty soon the USA will get rid of him and things will eventually get back to normal level of sanity. Do yourselves a favor , ignore him.
It's his own fault, he kicked CNN, MSNOW, and Politico out, which prompted the rest of the major media (including Fox News) to not cover him either. That event a few days ago where he was standing there bloviating with no mics from the media pool to pick up his nonsense was the absolute best.
Should the expected midterm blue wave come to be, we will finally have a Congress willing to put a leash on a lot of his bullshit. Unfortunately we can't just ignore him due to the office he holds.
That's worse! AI isn't about intelligence - that was a poor (but understandable) moniker & has led to some imbuing it with actual, sentient abilities that it doesn't have. It's not discerning, has no empathy or common sense, it doesn't understand. 'Superintelligence' is just more, utter b*llocks.
The problem trumpy has with 'artificial' is that it has too many syllables, making it impossible for him to pronounce. 'Super' is much easier for his tiny brain to manage.
Also, he didn't rename anything. He changed how the usa refers to things, which isn't the same thing at all.
Testing the old adage about a broken clock being right once a day (it's a 24 hour clock, ok?) Trump has a point about AI being a bad name. Having said that, and recovered from the shock, the problem isn't the word "Artificial" it's the word "Intelligence".
Calling it superintelligence is actually a step backwards in understanding.
