Abstracting the naming of the resource from its implementation is arguably adding a level of indirection.
The exception to this postulate is of course: "…except for the problem of too many levels of indirection."
I am guessing this allows storage to be migrated transparently without the need for the virtual machines using the resource to be aware of the migration. So the main benefit seems to be the decoupling of the two which could simplify the management of both.
