... (or any other anti-social media site) to be a source for official propaganda government announcements, anyway?

Meta (and the other anti-social media sites) aren't considered a source[0] by anyone with a clue, any more than Trump is.

Why government idiots officials keep trying to change this is beyond me[1] ... Shirley every government on the planet should say "We own our own Internet access and WWW servers. All official comments by us will be found on our equipment, and only on our equipment. Period. ... and then follow through with it.

Totally agree. And weirdly the government on sites like the IRS put in big letters that this IS a government website and how do you know. Emails from the government usually have similar "This is official" and "How do you know". Although I would prefer if the government ALWAYS used their own email servers instead of sometimes farming it out. I actually look at headers and if it came from a .com IP address I am immediately suspect of its provenance.

A nice sentiment, but it won't be them who pay. The big tech sites are believed by their customers (advertisers) to be THE places they HAVE to be, and all the tech companies need to do is agree to pay taxes, hike prices to cover that, and ultimately the price is paid by everybody in direct proportion to how much we spend with companies that choose this form of advertising. Obviously we can avoid those companies, but it takes some effort unless people are happy to buy exclusively and carefully from local markets, and it will usually be more expensive.

If they could hike prices they already would have. Prices will already be revenue maximising (given low variable costs revenue maximising pretty much equals profit maximising).

You cannot just pass on increases in costs without losing sales.

Modi is quite the Trumpian tool (as in he is an angry, racist, malevolent jerk, not that he's the Orange Angry Toddler's tool) and could well have posted something nasty.

And then someone just doing their job who didn't know he's a powerful autocrat who they're supposed to look the other way for took it down. Whoops.

Well who knows. Facebook is just as evil as he is, so who knows who was more evil this time.
