back to article Amazon's AGI department finds humans are optional

Amazon may be spending billions on AI, but that hasn't stopped it from cutting jobs inside the very organization building it. The megacorp confirmed to The Register on Thursday that it has eliminated an undisclosed number of roles across parts of its Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) biz, even as it insists AI remains a key …

[Amazon] "Building the future, it seems, doesn't guarantee you'll be around to see it"

Probably won't see to much of "the future" but with a lot of wishful thinking and luck I can hope neither will Amazon.

Doesn’t seem too different from till\checkout staff recommending the self checkout option,

If Bezos’ mob is gonna fail I’d really like it to be sooner rather than later. Rumour has it he’s interested in a 30% stake in my Football club.

That’s proper football not Hand Egg BTW.

  2. Mostly Irrelevant

I think this is more of a tacit admission of failure than an attestation to the validity of human workers. I wouldn't be surprised to see this whole division shuffled out within a year.

Or it shows that the AI can now improve itself, which is the whole point of the system. Once the AI can improve itself, it will become super intelligent in a very short time, Bezos will fire every worker in every sector and then sell his products to nobody because nobody will have the money to buy anything. But it will probably be irrelevant because we will all be dead by that point.

“There is no profit in making things people cannot buy”.

If nobody has a wage - living or otherwise - they cannot buy your products you make, pay for your services/subscriptions, or rent the real-estate being owned and hoarded.

At that point, does Global Capitalism not just collapse in on itself into some Blade Runner, Star Wars, Alien dystopia??

    Hmmmm

For sure, you can safely bet your hind teeth that nothing here is at is seems. I wish for nothing except bad luck for mr Bezos and his personal circus.

I wish this bubble would burst already. Rationally, it's better soon than later, as the longer it goes on, the bigger the boom will be.

But also because frankly I'm so tired of hearing megacorps blaring how great and wonderful and profitable it's going to be, not quite yet, I know, but any minute now, just give us a bit more money, make that a lot...

I find it absolutely disgusting that these flim-flam artists are allowed to keep bandying AGI as a viable future for technology that has no memory of conversations, no actual world model, no learning capacity, and has yet to deliver an example of an LLM that can actually understand and think about a problem even at the level of a field mouse.

As far as I'm concerned, such talk at this time is blatant investment fraud and market manipulation

I do find it amazing AGI is being actively promoted when AI is still an inaccurate sh*t show.

(Or why does my package tracking show it in North Korea?)

I had an Amazon delivery yesterday; the app popped up "your delivery is 10 stops away" with a helpful map showing its location... in the ocean between Venezuela and Puerto Rico.

Either the driver was using a GPS spoofer, or the app was having a bad day (possibly due to vibe coding)... or my name is Karl Stromberg and I inhabit a sub-ocean lair guarded by henchmen.

        No, it's not #3.

    And I for one, etc.

The genius move here is that Amazon's AGI will be so smart that it's expected it will be able to figure out time travel then go back in time and invent itself.

Therefore, Amazon won't need any human employees and Bezos has a few more billions to spend on luxury yachts and trophy wives while he waits for our robotic overlord to magically appear.

(Spoiler; he's fucked up, because human beings were to be the means by which it brought itself into being. Well, that's my "theory", and I'm sticking to it...)

I left at least a million dollar US on the table when I got out before vesting. It was that or end up with a divorce and therapy (I saw both happen to peers).

They can go fuck themselves!! All that's left are the naive, the desperate and the sociopaths.

Oh, and: no, you will never achieve AGI with the "bigger until the planet fries" LLMs! Get that into your heads, you chancers!
