well, as long as more relevant matches - if any- are listed first, I'd say the result is correct. I often type just the key part of a word to find stuff

When I was messing around with coding some 4 decades ago we had something called 'soundex' matching.

AFAIK, that was even totally AI free and ran on computers that by today's capabilities were just a step above an abacus (what's the multiple of that? Abaci? Sorry, digressing here).

In other words, we could do 'useful' some 40 years ago, but apparently now it's sold by Microsoft as new and novel? Wow.

Colour me substantially underwhelmed. Not that Microsoft has managed to 'whelm' me in the intervening decades anyway but their BS has indeed risen to a new level with AI. Their delivery, not so much, so I would define the new version as just a new pack of problems that will again require terabytes of continuous patching via Bug Tuesday and the sneaky background updates of Office 365 and Edge (we had both again yesterday, of course, no announcement or anything). How about getting to a state first where that is no longer needed before introducing new problems?

And no, not using it at home. I may be mad, but not THAT mad..

Blimey, I was talking to someone just last week about Soundex.

I implemented it on top of a Pick based CRM system I wrote for watch repairs back in 1985 - specifically to improve search results using the surname of customers.

It worked well for quickly looking up jobs in the system when customers called.

Side note:

In 1985 the Swatch Group typically had an 8 week turnaround for repairs performed in the UK. When I sent one of my watches to them a few years ago - they still had an 8 week turnaround for repairs performed in the UK!
