Surprised
That they didn't flag up the two missing stripes on the markings while they were at it.
"its teardown found the model is essentially an HTC U24 Pro with cosmetic tweaks and a Trump-friendly gold finish."
It won't be making smartphones great again. The long-awaited Trump-branded smartphone has finally arrived, and it appears to be exactly what many suspected: an existing handset in gold drag. Repair biz iFixit got its hands on the Trump Mobile T1 after the device became available in May, and its teardown found the model is …
> That they didn't flag up the two missing stripes on the markings while they were at it.
To be charitable to the grifter, I wonder if their marketing team thought it would be good idea for the text "TRUMP MOBILE" to be the thirteenth stripe of the flag, as a sort of brand logo...?
What I was thinking. Maybe it wasn't a detained immigrant that put it in a box, but the only US labor was putting it in a box. I will say a bit surprised it had micron memory instead of the SK. I'll be that cost a buck more. But OMG, what a mark the average trumper is. They remind me of a cat following a laser pointer.
Probably not even being put in a box in Florida. More like someone is slapping a "MADE IN USA" sticker on the China supplied and packed box.
Used to do factory work many moons ago and one job was slapping our own product label on some cheap eBay grade lab supplies, complete with "Made in UK" written on it. I think it was assumed that people wouldn't notice the "Made in China" embossed on the bottom of the plastic boxes everything was purchased in.
>a bit surprised it had micron memory instead of the SK.
A lot of memory is commodity, next week's production may be another supplier
One assembly plant we used had lock boxes of different ram on the production line and a system ran live bids against the different manufacturers for which stock to use
Do you think that there will be more than one week of production?
If there is, most of the second and subsequent weeks will go (to us a US term) straight to Landfill.
The [redacted] who signed up for this will be smarting from the slap in the face when they discover that they have been taken for a ride (on a gold covered train naturally)
Reminds me of someone who used to work for Express Dairies, years ago, explaining the difference between vegetarian and ordinary cheddar.
They ran 2 lines, one for a premium vegetarian cheddar that only ever used vegetarian rennet... the other using either animal rennet (from carves stomachs) or vegetarian rennet, depending on what was cheaper or simply available that day
Is that not only is it a midrange phone, it is what midrange was in 2024! Trump always screws his supporters. Always.
HTC probably had a lot of unsold inventory of that model and sold it to them as a discount, versus the alternative of finding a carrier dumb enough to foist them off on. Probably all that happens in the US is the old case is removed and discarded, and a new gold case is installed. Supposedly the placement of a few items like the speaker grill has been moved slightly. Not sure if that was intentional or was a screwup when they ordered the gold cases.
To be honest, both countries argue they're the true China.
Taiwan's official name is not Republic of China for no reason.
Let's hope it's waterproof, unlike Rudy Giuliani’s hair dye at the Four Seasons Total Landscaping

“This was not a paint job,” he declared. “This was highly sophisticated material, industrial strength, that could last for 100 years, applied by very talented people.”
Perhaps he should have got his Pool Guy to do the coating

They didn't say "Designed in America", they said "Designed with American values in mind".
To an extent that's true because _some of_ the values held in Taiwan are similar to those in the US.
Taiwan is proud of their democratic system, and they are pretty serious about their freedoms, what with the military dictatorship being a relatively close memory for the middle-aged and above.
The US appear to be moving away from democratic values, but Taiwan isn't, so far, and long may that continue!
It is. By their own admission.
> I expect a few bar brawls from less stupid people ridiculing the chump phone.
Just be subtle. Don't ridicule the Trumpiness of the phone. Instead imply that you as a real man wouldn't feel comfortable with all that flashy gold - more redolent French tart than Sean Connery… but fine for her indoors or if you are that sort of chap.
Have to remember these prats suffer from planet sized insecurity with equally massive overcompensation.
Inspired by the "Corner Gas" episode with rivalry for the ever smaller cellphones until one of the women suggested the latest tiny phone was perhaps a little effete.
I was in an "international supermarket" near me the other day. They had bags of rice from Iran; I'm willing to bet they were easier to import (and more in demand) than rice from the US, although I do note that some of the expensive "Japanese" sushi rice that is available round here is actually grown in the US.
Looks like a decent phone but what really sets it apart is the reactions it gets from liberals when they see it. The blood starts boiling and the veins in the face and neck stand out. Hatred is a silent killer. I just smile and think they really need to lighten up and learn to laugh. This is pretty funny really, just a phone until the name is attached and then it becomes the devil's spawn. Amazing how that works. Not just with phones either.
Less the name per se, more the fact that the name is being used in this way whilst he's still el Presidente.
If he'd still just been a reality TV show host and occasionally successful businessman, choosing to slap his name across everything like this in order to extract more cash from the gullible, then so be it. But to be doing so, knowing full well that his name currently has even more sway/power/whatever you choose to call it because of his privileged position at the top seat of US government, THAT'S the real problem IMO. He's cashing in whilst *still* in office, rather than having the decency to at least wait until his term ends before raking it in based on the still lucrative position of being a former President.
“.. the teardown suggests Trump Mobile is simply sourcing the product from HTC, which has been spotted using a contract manufacturer in China to produce the U24 Pro.” *
‘“Put those bits of information together, and what you have is not an 'American-Proud Design' but a phone designed in China, made in China, with the vast majority of parts sourced from China. I’m failing to find any stirring of American pride within me,” Mokhtari wrote.’
They told me the Trump phone was probably, and these guys were the top experts in the US ... in fact the whole world ...., the best they had ever seen, anywhere, in fact probably of all time.
And another thing..., oh and by the way it's pure solid gold all the way through, including the battery, did you know that?
Or even are these phones.that failed to meet HTC quality control standards and will fail in short order, where the purchasers will discover that there is no warranty given or implied, that worse still there is no fall back after any oversight has been abolished and the supreme court rules any warranty requirement is unconstitutional/ congress exempts trump mobile on national security grounds......
HTC have quality control now?
It probably isn't seconds, it's probably either stock that was produced, but demand for HTC phones never met the supply, so it was dumped, or the production line was still set up (or has been set up cheaply in mainland China) and someone has bought the rights to manufacture the boards from HTC.
HTC used to make relatively decent phones (around the time of the first Android phones), and they used to be my go-to brand, but their quality declined sharply. The last ones I had would probably have been almost ten years ago, and they had serious problems with both battery life, and in once case, a corrupted OS that failed updates, even those pushed to it via ADB. Their customer service consisted of "post it to China for repairs". I'm hardly surprised that the Grifter in Chief has gone for what is probably the cheapest and nastiest hardware on the market and coated it in some gold-coloured material that 100% isn't going to actually contain any gold.
