back to article Trump phone has HTC guts. Tremendous guts. The best guts

It won't be making smartphones great again. The long-awaited Trump-branded smartphone has finally arrived, and it appears to be exactly what many suspected: an existing handset in gold drag. Repair biz iFixit got its hands on the Trump Mobile T1 after the device became available in May, and its teardown found the model is …

To be charitable to the grifter, I wonder if their marketing team thought it would be good idea for the text "TRUMP MOBILE" to be the thirteenth stripe of the flag, as a sort of brand logo...?

Probably not even being put in a box in Florida. More like someone is slapping a "MADE IN USA" sticker on the China supplied and packed box.

Used to do factory work many moons ago and one job was slapping our own product label on some cheap eBay grade lab supplies, complete with "Made in UK" written on it. I think it was assumed that people wouldn't notice the "Made in China" embossed on the bottom of the plastic boxes everything was purchased in.

      What's really funny

Is that not only is it a midrange phone, it is what midrange was in 2024! Trump always screws his supporters. Always.

HTC probably had a lot of unsold inventory of that model and sold it to them as a discount, versus the alternative of finding a carrier dumb enough to foist them off on. Probably all that happens in the US is the old case is removed and discarded, and a new gold case is installed. Supposedly the placement of a few items like the speaker grill has been moved slightly. Not sure if that was intentional or was a screwup when they ordered the gold cases.

They didn't say "Designed in America", they said "Designed with American values in mind".

To an extent that's true because _some of_ the values held in Taiwan are similar to those in the US.

Taiwan is proud of their democratic system, and they are pretty serious about their freedoms, what with the military dictatorship being a relatively close memory for the middle-aged and above.

The US appear to be moving away from democratic values, but Taiwan isn't, so far, and long may that continue!

Looks like a decent phone but what really sets it apart is the reactions it gets from liberals when they see it. The blood starts boiling and the veins in the face and neck stand out. Hatred is a silent killer. I just smile and think they really need to lighten up and learn to laugh. This is pretty funny really, just a phone until the name is attached and then it becomes the devil's spawn. Amazing how that works. Not just with phones either.

    1. ChrisC Silver badge

Less the name per se, more the fact that the name is being used in this way whilst he's still el Presidente.

If he'd still just been a reality TV show host and occasionally successful businessman, choosing to slap his name across everything like this in order to extract more cash from the gullible, then so be it. But to be doing so, knowing full well that his name currently has even more sway/power/whatever you choose to call it because of his privileged position at the top seat of US government, THAT'S the real problem IMO. He's cashing in whilst *still* in office, rather than having the decency to at least wait until his term ends before raking it in based on the still lucrative position of being a former President.

    HTC phones

HTC used to make relatively decent phones (around the time of the first Android phones), and they used to be my go-to brand, but their quality declined sharply. The last ones I had would probably have been almost ten years ago, and they had serious problems with both battery life, and in once case, a corrupted OS that failed updates, even those pushed to it via ADB. Their customer service consisted of "post it to China for repairs". I'm hardly surprised that the Grifter in Chief has gone for what is probably the cheapest and nastiest hardware on the market and coated it in some gold-coloured material that 100% isn't going to actually contain any gold.
