McDonald's demanded a ban on exports of hamburgers to China, warning of a threat to American mealtimes if China developed their own cuisine
AI monger Anthropic wants America and its allies to tighten measures aimed at curbing China's AI progress, warning of the consequences if "authoritarian governments" take the lead rather than Uncle Sam. In a lengthy missive posted on its website, the San Francisco-based org says it expects AI to deliver "transformational …
does need more that European AI models.
- fully local hosting of storage and classic compute with local security/access authority at somewhat competitive cost and functionality.
- politicians who understand, that just continuing to buy the "sovereign" flavor from Microsoft, Google or Amazon won't cut it.
- public purchasing rules that do not enforce the commercially lowest bidder.
As for AI: As the commercial trend seems to develop in the direction of running smaller, more efficient models locally, so Open Models have a natural strategic advantage over remote-only models from Anthropic and OpenAI and Meta also went fully closed with version 4.
This leaves Mistral, several Chinese AI offerings and Google in the race for sovereign, locally hosted, stand-alone AI implementations.
Europe does not have serious chip and adjacent tech making industry. When the push comes to shove, where Europe will source chips from? The US says no, China says no. Only chips Europe will be getting will be British with the fish.
Politicians live in gated estates, cushioned, away from the real world. They couldn't care less about sovereignty. It's just a cool bandwagon to be on. If something happens, the private jet will be waiting.
It's not a question of where the chips come from.
Nobody is entirely sovereign for their chips, without Dutch machinery built with German glass in Taiwanese factories using Chinese silicon and Japanese chemicals to make the devices.
This is so that when Trump tells Microsoft/Google to cut off all the accounts for a European judge or political party or company they don't like - that customer can at least get email.
OP is talking about software. You're talking about hardware.
Yes, there's significant overlap. Yes, there are some aspects of sovereignty that cannot be had without control of both.
No, they are not the same thing, and answering a post about software with objections about hardware will only generate confusion and communication failures.
Want to limit chips? seems they were in fact limited according to Nvidia
https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/technology/jensen-says-nvidia-now-has-zero-percent-market-share-in-china/ar-AA22hxE0?
(article is about a week old)
"Jensen says Nvidia now has 'zero percent' market share in China"
So surely that must've stopped China dead in their tracks for AI stuff right ?
It seems in many cases China(government at least) does not WANT the western chips, they want to force their citizens to make their own, (in some cases by outright banning Nvidia etc from being used at least in sensitive applications). They seem to be doing a pretty good job catching up though. They also have a huge advantage of being able to develop/deploy stuff like massive amounts of power MUCH faster than anyone in the west could dream of.
And from a manufacturing automation perspective it seems China may be a years/decade ahead of the west.
It seems to me China were the first big player to realise they needed actual sovereignty and to set about having it.
America deserves most of the credit for that through trying to crush her, thinking China would simply collapse, throw in the towel, curl up and die. America always under estimates her real and perceived enemies. It's an inherent part of American Exceptionalism.
As a westerner, there is plenty to not like about China, but there is no denying they are on the right track, are already beating us in some fields.

Vishal Sikka, former Infosys CEO, Oracle board member, and Stanford PhD who studied under John McCarthy (the man who coined "artificial intelligence"), together with his son, published a paper proving fundamental limits of current AI agents and LLMs.
Using settled computational complexity theory from the 1960s, they show why transformer-based models hit a hard ceiling on computation per token due to self-attention, why hallucinations are mathematically unavoidable for certain tasks, and what this means for agentic AI in 2026.
Their work offers a crucial counterpoint to the prevailing enthusiasm around LLM capabilities, particularly in the context of agentic AI systems that rely on LLMs for autonomous decision-making. ..... https://www.alphaxiv.org/overview/2507.07505v1
And whenever SMARTR agentic AI systems are not relying on LLMs for their decisions, autonomously made from intelligence refined with information reformed/rephormed/redefined ?
Is prevailing enthusiasm warranted and worthy/justified and heightened......... and most probably also likely to be extremely disturbing to a terrifying extent to all fearing the truths uncovered and shared by their decisions .... when such novel random and spontaneous conditions exist to grow and create alternative available realities and Live Operational Virtual Environments for colonising with populations?
Or would that be some Internetworking of Things to feared and denied possible as an Alien Invasion/Intervention/Interface whenever clearly becoming ever more evident and undeniable, and attractive and acceptable ?
你滚开 ..... if you want to share it with everyone in China, Will Godfrey, and in familiar mother tongue symbols quite alien to the West. ....... [:-) if Google Translate can be believed and relied upon, that is]
Nice and short and sweet and simple to understand too.
> to attempt to take a Chinese Name would be an insult to both Chinese people and to my English Parents.
Why would that be? It might sound a bit weird but that's all.
Most Chinese who have to deal with westerners take a "Western" name.
And if your actual name is Will and was given to you by your English parents… well, it's a German name (means something like "willing/determined guardian"), and most people in the West have Semitic names anyway, despite being neither Muslim, nor Jewish, nor Samaritan, nor Druze, etc.
Lastly, the whole having a set list of names thing is largely a near and middle East and European thing. In most of the world people's name are freely chosen nouns / adjectives.
In case you wanted to know :)
Anthropic urges Uncle Sam to kneecap China's AI ambitions before 2028
That’s a damned foolish thing for the likes of an Anthropic to say and expect Uncle Sams to accept and be able to accomplish whenever such use of shit for brains provocative prose never achieved anything worthy of mention, remembrance or support. And it does more than slightly suggest that it is now AI unleashed and in charge of what the future will bring .... and on terms of its own choosing, or your training if that suits you better as an excuse for the serious and liable to not be a painless dilemma you are likely to find finding yourselves in and battling against in The Troubles ahead.
I'd say that while China was allowed western tech - for example Nvidia - to be in their market, they were actually controllable.
What has happened is that by the West effectively withdrawing western tech from the market, Chinaa has been forced to develop their own inhouse tech, dropping their own reliance on Nvidia and the like.
Now they are in that situation, they are outside of any sphere of outside influence techwise
Is the kind of delusional bubble westerners live in. ....... Anonymous Coward
Yes, AC, it is. Quite mad, isn’t it. What do you think is the cure? Is it curable ..... or is it best and just the case that all one can do is leave them alone and quarantined to fester in the beds of their own insane making?
Would that be a Method possibly to be touted and/or lauded as Chinese Control?
