back to article Amazon's European datacenter buildout blows a breaker as grid connection wait list hits 7 years

Amazon Web Services' European expansion has hit the buffers as the American cloud provider grapples with aging grid infrastructure and lengthy interconnect delays. AWS has moved quickly to flood the European continent with its elastic compute fabric, but while it may take two years to bring a new datacenter online, securing …

    Your power or your life

Soon, men with hooded masks holding you hostage and demanding your grid connection...

Seriously, are there any who think that the AI bubble will last this many years? I don't think so and just lets hope the bubble will burst this year so power and memory will enter the sanity region of affordability again.

    Opportunity Knocks !!!

This is a perfect point for Musk to spend some of his 'spare' cash and start building out the power infrastructure for the National Grid et al, at a suitable price.

He could use the SpaceX mentality to do things quicker and boost the rollout of better power infrastructure ... someone needs to push the bounds of what can be done as 7 years plus is just too slow.

Of course, he may need to 'move quick & break things' BUT SpaceX is good at that as well !!!

[Keep holding the face straight ... just a little while longer ... hold it ... hold iiiit ... annnnnd relax !!! ]

Breaking things is the one thing you can't do, when it comes to power... I worked on projects for nuclear reactors back in the 80s and early 90s, the testing involved is way ahead of what we were doing for other projects - and the level of testing done on normal projects has been mainly removed from the product lifecycle these days. We used to say that analysis and design was 30%, testing 60% and the rest code development, for power projects, the certification comes on top of that.

Then they should choose a region a bit off those centers...

...with enough space for their own solar + wind farm. Just 5 km² solar is enough. Batteries are cheap. It is not like A couldn't afford it, and it might even be cheaper than buying the electricity. (and probably be built quicker...) Spain has enough areas for such things.

That would require Amazon to spend money. They want to get a grid connection, and saddle residential customers with a lot of the cost like they have in the US.

They should stop bunnies DC’a in London, Sunkjn, Frankfurt etc.

Some rural areas where there is an excess of water and Green Electricity.

Like Scotland. Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Perth, Edinburgh, Eskdalemuir, Inverness, Fort William etc.

          Not such a bad idea !!! :)

Plenty of water to cool things and the 'slight' increase in temperatures/radiation could be 'easily' ignored !!!

Great amounts of water would be a natural barrier to any radiation leaks ... the 'only' risk would be growing your own Kaiju :=)

Britain is already a net importer of electricity - it's only French nuclear power keeps the lights on reliably. There are transmission constraints between Scotland and England that are being slowly addressed, in which case there won't be any surplus renewable power (but even those links won't be enough to stop us being reliant upon France).

    Electricity?

I hear China is doing things with solar panel, batteries and wind these days.

    Just a thought.

      Go

      Re: Electricity?

Yes! Let the bit barns run on solar, wind and batteries exclusively, BY ORDER. No gas and no grid connections. Nobody will shed a tear when the inverters splutter their last at 75% through a training checkpoint.

Burning finite global resources on this madness is, well, madness squared.

And no external cooling water, either. Use the solar/wind/battery power also to provide _all_ necessary cooling.

Or even, y'know, turn the fuckin' things off?

  5. paluster

    And finally

Perhaps this is where the bit barn fantics do the smart thing and try designing xhips that need less power and less cooling instead of expecting someone elsr to provude the water and electricity.

    Trojan Horse

Due to Cloud Act (and US administration being compromised by Russia) any branding or loophole using iteration of AWS should be a non-starter.

Governments should prioritise genuinely home grown corporations over tax shy multinational parasites.

like AMZN who will happily stump up $75M for the Melania thing... Just to keep the Orange Toddler happy for an hour or two...

And, any data in any US owned DC is subject to US Law and the operators are legally bound to send every little bit of your data to Uncle Donald should you sound off on him on Social Media.

Welcome to a No Fly List or worse, a Florida Swamp Gulag if you try to enter the sacred USofA then you will become just another of the possibly millions who have simply disappeared off the face of the planet. Meanwhile, there seem to be a lot of very fat Gators and Pythons in the Everglades.

      Just think on that.
